I believe everyone has a breaking point and I think I’ve reached mine as it relates to the media coverage Donald Trump has generated these last few weeks. I can’t even turn on cable “news” anymore without seeing various “news” personalities obsessing about Trump – with almost none of them actually saying anything worthwhile or meaningful.
And it’s not just a particular network, it’s practically every “news” channel. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to op-eds discussing Trump or news coverage concerning something important he’s actually said or done. After all, he is the leading Republican presidential candidate – but you wouldn’t know that he’s supposedly a legitimate presidential candidate by the way the “news” media covers him like a celebrity.
The bottom line is, I just can’t stomach the media coverage of Donald Trump any longer. I would absolutely love it if most of the media would actually treat him like a presidential candidate instead of a sideshow at their circus they’re desperately hoping to use to attract visitors – aka ratings, page clicks and revenue.
This is a guy with quite a checkered past, yet almost all I hear about is the pointless bullsh*t he keeps yammering on about now that’s nothing more than empty rhetoric meant to pander to voters dumb enough to believe it.
We get it, he’s anti-immigrant. How many weeks do we need to promote his idiocy as it relates to immigration? Here’s an idea: Why not point out that practically everything he’s said about immigration has been completely inaccurate?
Oh, wait, is that asking too much? You know, for news to actually be, I don’t know, informative?
The guy has flip-flopped, lied, twisted facts and just flat-out made up all sorts of nonsense – and I almost never hear anyone on any major “news” network call him out on it. I would pay money to see a reporter just repeatedly ask him the same question over and over until he answers it (or at least just gets up and walks away) as opposed to what I’ve been seeing where Trump basically owns every reporter he encounters because they’re too damn spineless to stand up to him.
It’s absolutely absurd that much of our media has become so pathetic that they’re treating him like a rock star just because they’re too busy using his asinine nonsense to get ratings.
All of these major “news” networks should be ashamed of themselves. Once upon a time our news was meant to inform and educate – now it’s basically just some pathetic form of reality television. Which, by the way, is exactly what Trump’s candidacy boils down to – a pathetic form of reality television.
I don’t give a damn if ratings are terrible when you report factual information that people need to know – that’s your freaking job. News isn’t supposed to be entertaining, it’s supposed to be informative.
If our “news” media wants to be in the revenue and entertainment business, then they really need to stop calling themselves “news.” The news isn’t meant to be about ratings, it’s supposed to be about informing the public of what they need to know. If people would rather watch the Real Housewives of Babbling Idiots, fine – but at least those working in our news can go to bed at night knowing that they did their jobs by reporting on relevant and important information instead of pandering to those fools who seem determined to turn the movie Idiocracy into a documentary.
