I have a confession to make: I sort of miss Michele Bachmann. Not because I liked her, but because she was easily one of the most ridiculous members of Congress I think most of us will ever witness. While I’m not a medical professional, in my opinion, she’s pretty darn close to being legitimately crazy.
I mean, it’s pretty bad when you’re a fairly well-known former Republican member of Congress and Fox News won’t even hire you. To this day it still blows my mind that she somehow managed to receive enough votes to get elected to Congress – multiple times.
Well, while she’s no longer an elected official, that doesn’t stop Ms. Bachmann from resurfacing occasionally to remind us all that she’s completely out of her damn mind. Take for instance recent comments she made where she tried to claim that current GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump is polling better with Mexican voters than any Republican – ever:
Donald Trump’s numbers show that he’s the highest with African-Americans that any Republican has ever been, and the highest with Hispanics that any Republican has ever been.
Not surprisingly, Politifact rated her statement as False.
Not only is Trump not polling better with Hispanics than any other Republican – ever – but he’s not even viewed more favorably than the other GOP candidates he’s running against. In fact, in a Gallup poll Politifact cited, Trump not only ranks dead last among all Republican candidates – but it wasn’t even close. Comparing his favorable/unfavorable numbers, Trump scored the worst with Hispanic voters with a net favorable rating of -51 (65 percent unfavorable, 14 percent favorable). Who came in second place? None other than Trump’s good pal Ted Cruz, at -7.
So, it’s not just that Trump is unpopular with most Hispanic voters, but they pretty much hate him. And for good reason.
Then again, when it comes to Republicans, almost nothing surprises me anymore. After all, Trump did call most Mexican immigrants criminals and rapists – then promised that he will “win” the Latino vote.
While Trump’s comment was clearly based on the fact that he’s an arrogant salesman who’s going to say and do whatever he wants even if it makes absolutely no sense, Bachmann’s remarks seemed to be based on nothing more than her own delusions. There’s absolutely no basis of reality where any sane or rational person could claim that Trump is polling well with Latino voters. To even suggest such a thing is embarrassing and just flat-out stupid – which is why it really doesn’t surprise me that these comments came from somebody like Michele Bachmann.
This is the sort of nonsense to which I’m referring when I say I’ve lost the ability to take most Republicans seriously anymore. It’s not just that they’ve built an entire political party based on lies and propaganda – it’s that many of the party’s own members seem to actually believe the crap that they’re shoveling.
