Republicans opposing the Constitutional right for women in this country to have an abortion is nothing new. Despite the fact that this issue was settled over 40 years ago by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade, the GOP continues to try to do everything it possibly can to prevent women from being able to have an abortion. While they can’t pass laws that place an outright ban the procedure, they have spent decades trying to find loopholes to make it all but impossible for women to actually find a clinic that’s allowed to perform them. In some cases there’s only one clinic within hundreds of miles, and depending on state laws, women are often subjected to medical procedures meant to try to guilt or shame them into changing their mind.
It’s no surprise that after a radical anti-abortion group released several highly edited videos of Planned Parenthood discussing their dealings with medical companies for research, Republicans were quick to jump on this propaganda in their continued attempt to shut down the organization. For years the GOP has wanted to get rid of Planned Parenthood, even though only 3 percent of what the organization does is related to performing abortions. In fact, the largest part of what Planned Parenthood does is provide contraceptive services, which help prevent unwanted pregnancies – the #1 cause of abortions in the first place.
The rhetoric surrounding Planned Parenthood has become so ridiculous lately that Republicans like Sen. Ted Cruz have even suggested they’re willing to shut down the government to defund the organization, and Jeb Bush even tried to say that Planned Parenthood offers no women’s health services at all.
Well, last night Mike Huckabee upped the ante during an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, reaching disgusting levels by comparing Planned Parenthood to ISIS.
“Terrorists cut people’s heads off and that’s what they do in the Planned Parenthood clinics,” he told Hannity. “Civilized people don’t hack other people to death and then sell the parts because there’s money to be made.”
This “man” just basically said that any woman who has had an abortion is no better than a terrorist beheading a hostage. Then, for the rest of us who support the Constitutional right for women to have control over their own bodies, we’re all apparently just uncivilized supporters of terrorists. That’s ironic coming from someone who would use such deplorable rhetoric against women. You can disagree with abortion if you want, but saying women who’ve had an abortion are no better than terrorists who behead hostages is reprehensible.
Then to make matters even more absurd, just before he compared Planned Parenthood to ISIS – he was throwing a fit because Hillary Clinton compared the GOP’s outdated views on women to those of Islamic radicals. He whined about Clinton doing exactly what he proceeded to do, except what he said was far more deplorable and offensive.
And here’s a fun fact about which Huckabee apparently isn’t aware: The 1954 Nobel Prize was awarded to scientists who used fetal tissue (you know, the same tissue he claims is nothing but hacked off body parts) to develop the polio vaccine. I guess those “terrorists” who used that fetal tissue to develop the polio vaccine just weren’t “civilized” either.
People can obsess over the nonsense Donald Trump spews practically every day, but if you really want to talk about the most vile candidate running for the Republican party’s presidential nomination, without question, it’s Mike Huckabee.
