At this point, I really don’t even know what to make of Mike Huckabee anymore. If he were my father or grandfather, I would probably be pushing to get him checked out for some serious mental health issues because something just doesn’t seem right “upstairs.”
Just from a political standpoint, even in the ultra-religious Republican party, GOP leaders have to be saying to themselves, “What the hell is wrong with this fool?”
Take for instance comments he made earlier this year (that have just now come to light) while discussing members of the transgender community.
“I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE,” Huckabee said. “I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.’ You’re laughing because it sounds so ridiculous doesn’t it?”
He’s. Such. An. Idiot.
Look, I’ll be one of the first to tell you that I’m not too sure what to make of this new idea being floated around of potentially mixing young men and women together because some boys claim they identify as girls or visa versa. The harsh truth is, there might not be a “right” answer to it. I think getting into this subject, we’re opening up a whole mess of issues. I mean, do we let gay males shower with females or is it just transgendered? Then do we let lesbians shower with males? Do we create separate facilities altogether which might be seen as a form of “shaming” or segregation? Would women feel comfortable showering in front of a male who claims to be female?
I honestly don’t know the answer to any of it. In my mind, the simplest thing is to just keep it how it is. While it might not be the perfect answer, I think it’s the simplest and least controversial.
Though what Huckabee did with these comments is essentially turn the entire situation into a big joke. Is he really assuming that a high school male would want to be wrongfully labeled as “transgender” just for the sake of seeing females in the shower? Is his brain really that small? Because there’s a hell of a lot more that goes along with being transgender than simply who you shower with – and, especially in high school, a lot of it isn’t exactly positive. Transgender teenagers are often the targets of harassment, bigotry and bullying.
Now, would there be a student or two who might do this? Possibly. Which is why I said earlier that the entire situation might not have a “right” answer to it. But Huckabee did nothing but take a situation in this country that’s extremely complex and turn it into some sort of caricature of idiocy taken directly from his own immaturity.
While he tried to play his comments off as nothing more than a joke, his intention to degrade the transgender community was blatantly obvious. And nothing says “Christian values” quite like belittling, judging and mocking other human beings, right?
