Mike Huckabee’s Sexist Comments Display Just How Ignorant Republicans Are About Women’s Health

huckabeeOh Mike Huckabee, there was actually a time when I didn’t think he was that bad of a guy.  Then again, I only knew a small fraction about him and the small sample size I had been given seemed to show a fairly level-headed Republican.

Well, I was wrong.

I’m sure many of you have heard by now about Mike Huckabee’s extremely ignorant (and fairly sexist) comments about women and contraceptives.

If you haven’t, here they are:

“Women I know are outraged that the Democrats think that women are nothing more than helpless and hopeless creatures whose only goal in life is to have the government provide for them birth control medication.  If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it.”

What the hell is this idiot talking about?

Literally nothing he said makes any sense.  How exactly is providing access to birth control somehow Democrats thinking that women need it forced on them?

Nobody is forcing women to take any form of birth control.  Nobody is talking about the “libido” of any woman.  What Democrats support is women having access to contraceptives if they choose to use them.

I swear, Republicans literally don’t get the difference between providing access and mandating something.  They always talk about “freedom” – yet somehow allowing women to choose what to do with their own bodies, allowing gay couples to marry if they so choose, or giving women the choice to use birth control is an attack on freedom?

Yeah – if you’re delusional.

What the government wants is for women to have access to contraceptives – that’s it.  There’s nothing Democrats are pushing for to require women to take them.

Then his ignorance is on full display by assuming that the only reason women would take birth control is if they’re having sex.  When in fact millions of women take these pills for health reasons.

It’s just stunning how stupid some of these people can be.

Then he went on to claim that Republicans aren’t waging a war on women, but “for women.”

That actually made me laugh.  He’s just ridiculous.  The entire pretense behind what he said has no factual, logical or sensible basis whatsoever.  Oh, but it sounds good to a bunch of ignorant conservative voters who lack the ability to think for themselves.

To be honest, I wasn’t even offended as most have been by his “Uncle Sugar” comment.  The rest of what he said was so outlandishly absurd that “Uncle Sugar” didn’t even stick out to me.

But Huckabee’s comments did put on full display the absolute ignorance many Republicans have about women’s rights.  To them, access to contraceptives is just about “women going out and having sex” because that’s how small-minded these people are.  When in fact millions of women use birth control for health reasons unrelated to sexual activity.

But conservatives never let the facts get in the way of what they think is a great soundbite, do they?

Concurrent with the Limbaugh/Fluke affair, the Left conjured up what they affectionately dubbed the ‘Republican War on Women”. By assigning victimhood to women and lecturing them daily about how the mean old Republicans disrespected them (because of their gender) they portrayed them as a group whose entire quality of life hinged on whether or not someone would come up with the money to pay for their birth control. Many women (my wife among them) were not fooled. They recognized this as a shameless, sexist, disrespectful and insulting ploy to exploit them for political profit. These are the women Huckabee is referring to.
Two of Quinn’s laws seem applicable. (1) Liberalism always produces the exact opposite of its stated intent, and (2) If you want to know what Liberals are up to, pay attention to what they accusing conservatives of.

Society’s quality of life goes up when people use birth control and have less kids. As population grows life quality goes, Jim Bean.

With all the expensive medicaid births that happen every day that are several times more expensive than a lifetime supply of birth control, anyone who understands economics or common sense can see that public birth control is a great method.

It is the poorest among women who need that government assistance the most. They will be having several babies and we will be footing the bill of their medicaid births and child welfare.

This also helps men! Less paying into child support and more control of family size. Birth control as stated before is not just for sex, it has health benefits. Even when it’s for sex married couples use it to keep their family a modest size so they can afford to give their kids a great shot at life and a college education. I don;t think many parents can pay college for 10 freakin babies.

Your wife is the fool and your the idiot who bangs her. I feel sorry for your derpa derp kids. Good thing big government has programs for that.

The question never was, “Do you Jim Beam, oppose giving women ‘free’ birth control?” If it had, my answer would have “No, not at all” and for all the reasons you so succinctly stated.

The actual conversation (paraphrasing) was, (Clifton) ‘Why would Huckabee say “Democrats think that women are nothing more than helpless and hopeless creatures whose only goal in life is to have the government provide for them birth control medication…?” And I, Jim Beam (again paraphrasing) responded, ” Because Liberals jumped on the Limbaugh/Fluke thing and manufactured this Republican ‘war on women’ hoax. They beat it to death and made it sound like, in their opinion, this was the only issue that mattered to women in order for them to decide who they would vote for. And while it apparently worked out that way in many cases, the more sophisticated women were insulted by how simple-minded the Liberals/Dems made them appear.” Sorry if I wasn’t clear.

Clear as straw on both occasions.

I’m not a Huckabee fan but he wasn’t far off the mark critiquing how Democrats portray women:

Besides Sandra Fluke there was the Lena Dunham Obama ad,
(Google) “Lena Dunham: Your First Time”

Recently, Colorado posted some ads promoting the (un)ACA as a means to get supplies for recreational sex. “One ad has the title “Let’s Get Physical,” with the text: “OMG, he’s hot! Let’s hope he’s as easy to get as this birth control. My health insurance covers the pill, which means all I have to worry about is getting him between the covers.” -WSJ Another ad, playing on a Ryan Gosling meme, starts, “Hey girl, you’re excited about easy access to birth control and I’m excited about getting to know you.” Bible scholars will appreciate the double entendre of “getting to know you” as defining what women are for.

Considering the clientele, the freebees are probably a good idea. I liked Libertarian Girl’s response to the Dunham ad,
(Google) “Lena Dunham: Your First time Parody”.

      • Jim Bean

And then they think conservatives are the immoral ones for not being on board with wholesale abortion.

      • 1EdMeadows83

I don’t think Conservatives are the immoral ones for their stand on abortion. I think they are amoral for a hundred different reasons.

      • Jim Bean

That because you think in any instance of disagreement, you command the higher moral ground. That’s a presumption without foundation.

    • buricco

      Projection much?

    • 1EdMeadows83

In case you don’t know what a syllogism is, I’ll offer one. “All Republicans are stupid. You are a Republican. Therefore: You are stupid” You probably disagree with that but you give strength to it with your asinine comments about Liberals assigning victimhood to women. It is not we who desire to take the right to vote away from women. It is not we who demand control over women’s bodies. It is not we who force women to do the same work as men while paying them less. What Liberals desire is simply free and fair elections, equal civil rights, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, free trade and private property, all of which is anathema to Republicans. You really should bone up a bit on civil issues and remove thy foot from thy mouth.

      • Jim Bean

I’m a registered Democrat so all the rest is moot. There are Democrats who don’t march in lock-stop and think outside the Democratic Party razor wire.

  • Suzanne Lehman

Actually, Huckabee might also be referring to the women who created and are part of the organization called “Women Speak For Themselves”. I don’t expect you to actually care about anyone else’s genuine positions on this matter but, in the event that you do, you might look at their website and see that you are misrepresenting them and their views.

    • Pipercat

.. or maybe not. Huckabee’s statement is a straw man.

I have yet to see Wolf Blitzer or Rachel Maddow as a guest speaker at the DNC meetings – why in the universe would the use a ‘fair and balanced’ fox contributor as a keynote speaker..

  • Sandy Greer

Well, he doesn’t know me! LOL Because I’m not ‘outraged’ at the Dems! Dems don’t see me as ‘helpless and hopeless’ and they CERTAINLY don’t think my ‘only goal’ is ‘govt birth control’. Good Lord, just SMH that Huckabee would condescend to speak for me in such a patronizing manner.
THIS is what they don’t get about the War on Women.
^^^MEN. Telling me what I should be ‘outraged’ over, and when I should be ‘insulted’. Like they don’t think have a brain in my head, and can’t make up my own mind what I think.
Straw Man indeed, Pipercat. This was Huckabee’s snide way to get in a few digs on Dems. But it’s illustrative of the ignorance GOP has WRT the War on Women, and what is REALLY ‘insulting’ to women.

Lizard, I should warn you that your freaky little buddy, Harry Reid, used to blow dry his curlys before he went to the Chicken Ranch. One night on the way out there he plugged into the wrong power supply and set himself on fire.

So be careful and take it from Wacky Harry, a 3 ” piece of charcoal has a street value of practically nothing. After that stunt he was a charred ruin and not even Janet Reno was interested in him.

  • The argument is about whether gov’t should PAY for something, not about access.

    • freethinker666

      You mean like wars.

      • Freedom isn’t free, and as long as we have enemies the gov’t will have to pay for wars. Sad but true.

    • CherMoe

Actually, that’s where you are dead wrong. Their EXCUSE is that it’s about government paying for access. It is their GOAL to outlaw abortion and contraception and even sex outside of marriage. To go further, Republicans want to prevent women from getting a divorce, from being able to work outside the home, to ban them from voting in any way they can … and I’m sure they’ll somehow revert back to preventing them from owning property. And it all starts with forcing women into pregnancy and making them stay married to abusive men. All the above-mentioned things give women freedom … so they are chipping away at our rights in order to put us back into servitude to the males in America.

      • Other than overturning Roe v Wade, I don’t see Republicans being able to or even wanting to do all that. It’s just typical scare tactics from the other side. But there is something sick about women regarding running a home, bearing and raising children as servitude. Visit Crown Heights in Brooklyn and ask the Hasidic women with large families if they regard themselves as being in servitude. To God yes, but not to anybody else.

      • 1EdMeadows83

But, but, but what if there is no god?

      • 1EdMeadows83

Are you a Hasidic Jew? Neither am I, nor, I suspect are most of the women on this thread. CherMo is exactly right. It is the desire of today’s GOP to relegate women to the status they endured in the nineteenth century. If you believe differently you’re either a Republican or utterly ignorant – but really that’s the same thing, isn’t it?

  • Alecta

It doesn’t matter at all what a woman’s reasons for using birth control are. Her reproductive health is private. Her choices, and reasons, are her business alone. Her doctor may be privy to them for practical reasons.
I do wonder what this focus is meant to distract us from.

  • Remedy Chill

Never trust an enemy to tell you what others believe.

  • Sunnysmom

This guy puts the douche in douchebag. Unbelievable.

  • Mike Williams

With all the constant screwing the government does to the public it would be nice if they did provide birth control. Although when you think about it. If more women had birth control, there would be less Mike Huckabees.
So maybe this is like the Catholic view, only for republicans it will ensure a greater chance for republicans to be born,

  • DrPhrogg

Where is the outrage over men getting Viagra? Why do I have to pay for someone to have sex when God clearly said his time was up?

    • You’re right. The gov’t shouldn’t have to pay unless it’s a treatment for infertility.

Republicans want just enough smaller government to fit into people’s underwear.

  • Burt Lancaster

I live in Arkansas and actually voted for him as gov back in the day. But he’s been “saved” ( baptised himself as a TP fav) and immersed himself in the way out wackiness of the far right. There was a time when he actually made sense to folks, but that day has gone. He was ranting the other day about being violated at the airport but expressed outrage that you could show up to vote without having to produce 800 forms of id. So add voter suppression to the list of things Huckabuck now supports…

  • LOL @ Huckabuck

  • Nanci Merczel

Yes, and then they wonder why so many women are turned off by the republican party!
