I probably wouldn’t have done this article under normal circumstances, but following the Orlando shooting the hypocrisy in how we view terrorists has been a topic many have been discussing. So, when I came across the story where a radical militia leader (and Cliven Bundy supporter) William Keebler was arrested after placing a bomb at a federal BLM building, I felt inclined to write about it.
As reported by The Salt Lake Tribune:
FBI undercover employees became members of Keebler’s “Patriots Defense Force,” charging documents say, and trained for an “anti-government action” where, Keebler told members, they would be “going on the offensive.”
Keebler’s group scouted the BLM office in the Gateway Mall in Salt Lake City as a potential target but found it unsuitable due to the commercial and homeless activity, charging documents state.
Prosecutors allege that Keebler told the group it would target BLM facilities in “the middle of nowhere,” damaging vehicles and buildings. He asked a militia member — who happened to be an FBI undercover employee — to build an explosive device.
They actually let him place the “bomb” at the federal building, only for it to obviously fail to detonate.
First, let’s point out the obvious that if Keebler were a Muslim who was trying to do something like this, this would be a much bigger story and Republicans would be pointing to it as an example where “radical Islamic terrorists” were here and trying to carry out attacks. I have no doubts Donald Trump would be using it as “another example” to push for his ban on Muslims and to vilify all of Islam.
However, because this involves a white male (most likely a Christian and gun fanatic) anti-government activist, you’re not likely to see this mentioned on Fox News (if at all) or discussed by many (if any) Republicans.
But this is exactly what I meant when I wrote this article a few days ago outlining the hypocrisy we have in this country as it relates to these radical, anti-government gun fanatics. These groups are spread out throughout our country, openly discussing their disdain for our government, stockpiling weapons and ammunition, all while publicly admitting that they’re not against the possibility of carrying out violent attacks against the government.
Can you imagine if we had numerous groups of Muslims doing the exact same thing as these “patriotic militia” idiots? Conservatives would be losing their minds. Forget banning the religion, there would be calls for massive raids into each and every one of these groups for doing nothing but exactly what these “militias” comprised of mostly white, Christian males say and do all the time.
While I’m not at all discounting the very real threat Islamic terrorism poses to this country, I think it’s time we start changing the way we talk when we’re discussing what is or isn’t a “terrorist group.” Because if you ask me, these anti-government white males who are obsessed with guns and the possibility of overthrowing the federal government aren’t part of a “militia,” they’re members of a terrorist group.
But you don’t have to believe me — Article III, Section 3 of our Constitution clearly states that they are.
