Minnesota Republican Tweets Blatantly Racist Thoughts About the NBA and Street Crime

pat-garofaloThere’s nothing wrong with someone not being a fan of the NBA.  I’ve often said that if I wasn’t a fan of a particular team, I probably wouldn’t watch the sport at all.

It seems Minnesota State Representative Pat Garofalo isn’t much of a fan of the league either.  Not if you go by his racist tweet where he said that if most of the NBA shut down tomorrow, the only noticeable difference would be a rise in street crime.

Here’s the tweet:

Some might be asking, “Why is this racist?”  Well, because the NBA is mostly comprised of African Americans.  In fact, 78 percent of NBA athletes are African American.

Essentially his tweet presumes that if many of these players (again, 78 percent African American) were to be out of a job tomorrow, instead of finding gainful employment and being productive citizens in our society, they would simply turn to a life of street crime.

You know, because that’s what African Americans do, right?  If they’re not out “playing hoops” the only other possible “profession” they might pursue would be street criminal.

But I doubt anyone who reads this will be shocked with a Republican saying or doing something racist.  Just take a look at what one of the queens of the right-wing media, Ann Coulter, said at CPAC.

And I might simply dismiss this comment by Mr. Garofalo, except it’s far too specific to simply be a “slip of the tongue.”  He could have simply left it as, “Let’s be honest, 70% of teams in the NBA could fold tomorrow + nobody would notice a difference.”  That alone would have been more than enough of a point to make that the NBA is watered-down and lacking enough talent to fill the rosters of most teams.

But no.  He had to throw in the little quip about an increase in street crime accompanying the hypothetical “folding” of 70 percent of NBA teams to showcase his prejudice he obviously feels toward African Americans.

It’s like I’ve said more times than I can count, if Republicans don’t want to be viewed as the party of racists, they need to stop acting like – or associating with – racists.  Though even that basic of a statement seems to be something Republicans are simply incapable or unwilling to understand.
