Mother of Late Ambassador Chris Stevens Slams ‘Opportunistic’ Republicans, Donald Trump

Despite the fact that every Benghazi-linked conspiracy theory has been soundly debunked (even by Republican-led investigations), that hasn’t stopped Republicans and their presidential candidate Donald Trump from continuing to use the attack as a way to slander Hillary Clinton.

Even at the Republican National Convention, they disgustingly brought out the mother of one of the four victims who specifically blamed the former secretary for her son’s death. While I’m sympathetic to her loss, she’s not blaming Clinton based on facts, but rather on her own personal desire to blame the former secretary. The Republican party used her anger by putting her on that stage, not because they really care about her son’s death, but because they wanted her to blame Clinton for it — which they knew she would.

One family you didn’t see speak at the Republican National Convention (nor will you see many Republicans mention them much at all) is the family of the late Ambassador Chris Stevens. No life is more important than another, but Stevens was the most well-known and high-ranking of the four victims.

So, if Republicans really care about Benghazi, then why wasn’t his family asked to speak?

Because they’ve come out publicly and said that they don’t blame Hillary Clinton and it’s unfair for some to continue to try to do so:

I do not blame Hillary Clinton or Leon Panetta. They were balancing security efforts at embassies and missions around the world. And their staffs were doing their best to provide what they could with the resources they had. The Benghazi Mission was understaffed. We know that now. But, again, Chris knew that. It wasn’t a secret to him. He decided to take the risk to go there. It is not something they did to him. It is something he took on himself.

Those comments were made by Chris Stevens’ sister, Dr. Anne Stevens, who also happens to be the family spokesperson.

However, despite those words coming from Chris Stevens’ own family, that didn’t stop Republicans from exploiting the attack again during their presidential convention.

Well, now Ambassador Stevens’ mother wrote a letter to The New York Times slamming Republicans and Donald Trump for continuing to evoke her son’s name in an effort to use his death as a means to attack Hillary Clinton:

As Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens’s mother, I am writing to object to any mention of his name and death in Benghazi, Libya, by Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican Party.

I know for certain that Chris would not have wanted his name or memory used in that connection. I hope that there will be an immediate and permanent stop to this opportunistic and cynical use by the campaign.

Oakland, Calif.

Let me repeat, that’s the mother of Chris Stevens telling Republicans and Donald Trump that she’s sick and tired of them exploiting her son’s death – which they’ve been doing for nearly four years now.

This is what I mean when I’ve consistently said (for years now) that Republicans couldn’t care less about what happened in Benghazi. When they couldn’t use the attack to hurt President Obama in 2012, all they did was shift the focus toward Hillary Clinton to use it against her this year. They’ve lied, pushed conspiracy theories and have politicized these deaths for the sole purpose of trying to hurt Clinton’s chances of becoming our next president.

I can’t even imagine what this must be like for Ambassador Stevens’ family. To constantly see a political party exploit your son’s death to use as a weapon against an opponent must be absolutely sickening.

Even after the comments from Chris Stevens’ sister, or this letter from his mother, they won’t stop — because Republicans don’t care about the victims or their families. This isn’t about honoring them, this is about nothing more than politics and exploiting the attack to slander Hillary Clinton.
