Aside from battling conservatives who seem determined to destroy the middle class, set this country back decades and turn the United States into a fanatical Christian theocracy, my second biggest nemesis tends to be ridiculous far-left liberals who, quite frankly, often make the left look like complete idiots.
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m not much of a fan of this overly PC culture that seems to be taking over parts of the left. While I’m absolutely sympathetic to, and appalled by, contextually offensive rhetoric, I’m opposed to those people who really just need to lighten the hell up and stop looking for things by which
to pretend to be “offended.” We’ve reached a point with some of this politically correct nonsense that we can’t even discuss controversial topics that get people thinking critically because someone, somewhere is going to be “offended” by the discussion. I’ve actually spoken with professors who no longer assign certain reading material, or lecture on certain topics, because with each passing year student complaints grew greater and greater.
Personally, I love controversial and sometimes offensive topics. I think the only way we’re ever gong to solve many of these problems that plague this nation is to speak on these topics honestly. It’s worthless to have serious debates on a lot of these topics if we can’t speak on them openly and honestly.
That being said, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry just took the PC copter for a spin that left me with a temporary headache. This is the kind of stuff that gives easy ammunition for conservatives to use to mock liberals.
Yes, Melissa Harris-Perry seems to believe that Star Wars is racist because – wait for it – Darth Vader is black:
“I know why I have feelings – good, bad and otherwise – about Star Wars. I spent the whole day talking about the Darth Vader situation. The part where he was totally a black guy, whose name was basically James Earl Jones. While he was black he was terrible and bad, awful and used to cut off white men’s hands, and didn’t actually claim his son. But as soon as he claims his son, goes over to the good, takes off his mask and he is white. Yes, I have many feelings about that.”
First, Darth Vader’s outfit was black… though James Earl Jones was not cast to voice the character until after the movie had already begun shooting. When filming began they had no idea how Vader was going to sound. Eventually, they decided on Jones and his incredibly unique voice to be the mouthpiece for perhaps the most infamous villain in cinema history. Again, this was long after the story had been written and the movie had already started shooting.
Not only that, but Vader didn’t “abandon” his children. In fact, he was trying to find Luke to “bring him to the dark side.” But even going further, of course Vader is white when he takes off his mask – he’s Luke and Leia’s father – two characters who, in case you hadn’t noticed, are white.
As for the coloring of Vader’s outfit, that’s nothing more than a classic case of “darkness battles the light.” It’s a huge part of the entire Star Wars saga, which is often represented by black versus white.
I’m sorry, this is all so stupid.
But this is what makes liberals look really bad. This feeds right into the hands of conservatives who are looking for any reason to point at liberals and say “See, look how radical they are! They’re even trying to make Star Wars about race!” In turn, this cheapens real debates we need to have about actual racism.
Though this isn’t exactly unusual for Melissa Harris-Perry.
In October, she went on another ridiculous tirade about the phrase “hard worker,” claiming using the term is disrespectful to slaves.
“I want us to be super-careful when we use the language ‘hard worker,’ because I actually keep an image of folks working in cotton fields on my office wall, because it is a reminder about what hard work looks like,” Harris-Perry said.
Apparently, according to her, you can’t call yourself a “hard worker” – in any capacity – because of slavery.
Again – that’s just astoundingly stupid.
All Melissa Harris-Perry is doing here is giving conservatives what they want. Trust me when I say that these Star Wars comments, much like her “hard worker” comments from a couple of months ago, will be picked up by the conservative media and mocked relentlessly – and deservedly so.
Honestly, her comments infuriate me. For those of us who constantly battle the delusions of conservatives when it comes to racial issues, the last thing we need is someone like her making the rest of us who are trying to have real debates about real racism to improve race relations look like fools because she’s a buffoon.
