When it comes to the health care situation in our nation, there’s obviously no shortage of topics to discuss. Especially now that, after years of promising to “repeal and replace Obamacare,” they finally have the legislative power to do just that.
When the House finally passed their version of Trumpcare a few weeks ago, we all saw what an absolute disaster that bill was. Around 23 million losing health care, a massive gutting of Medicaid, massive hikes on premiums for Americans 50 and older — it was such a terrible piece of legislation that Senate Republicans immediately said they weren’t even going to bring it up for a vote.
In fact, thirteen Republican senators — all men, by the way — were already working on their own health care bill at the time the House passed their version.
Which begs the question: What kind of bill are Senate Republicans working on?
That’s a question I’d love to answer, except I can’t. You see, Senate Republicans aren’t only keeping the details of their health care bill secret, they’re apparently gearing up to force it through Congress within about a 14-day stretch that would include not sharing it with every member of the Senate before sending it to the the Congressional Budget Office. They would then take that CBO score, debate it on the floor, then try to pass the bill.
Again, this would all occur over about a two-week stretch concerning a bill Senate Republicans are purposely keeping secret.
That’s the point of this article.
Forget everything else that will eventually come out about the Senate’s bill. The details are clearly important, but we will eventually find those out later. For now, all anyone really needs to know about this piece of legislation is that these thirteen senators are doing their best to conceal its details so that nobody — even most of their own colleagues — will know what’s in it until they absolutely have to reveal the specifics.
If the Senate’s bill was something they knew people would overwhelmingly support — a health care plan that would provide better, cheaper coverage for more Americans — then they would be doing everything they can to make sure the entire country knew what they were working on.
But they’re not.
Not only do they seem too scared to publicly reveal the details of their plan, but they’re not even letting other Republican senators know what’s in it.
Based on their extremely sketchy and secretive behavior, it’s obvious they’re already aware that if Americans find out what they’re planning for health care, and how truly awful it’s going to be, that’s going to make it much more difficult for them to force it through Congress.
Unfortunately, that seems to be exactly why this small group of Senate Republican men are doing just about everything they can to keep the specifics of their health care bill as secret as possible. They want to force it through Congress as quickly as they can so that most Americans won’t know those details until it’s already too late.
The simple truth is this: If this bill was something Republicans were proud of, they damn sure wouldn’t be keeping it from the American people.
