So much for ignoring that “overreaching federal authority” now, huh? It seems even Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie (a local law enforcement official) believes that Cliven Bundy is not only guilty of violating federal laws when he allowed his cattle to illegally graze on federal lands, but that he “must be held accountable” for encouraging (and allowing) his supporters to aim guns at federal agents and police.
Gillespie said that he had spoken with Bundy and his family prior to the April confrontation and warned them that any protest should be done so peacefully.
Though he says the family crossed the line when they allowed armed supporters to aim guns at law enforcement officials.
“If you step over that line, there are consequences to those actions. And I believe they stepped over that line. No doubt about it,” Gillespie said. “They need to be held accountable for it.”
He also criticized the BLM’s handling of the situation.
“I came back from that saying, ‘This is not the time to do this,’” he said. “They said, ‘We do this all the time. We know what we’re doing. We hear what you’re saying, but we’re moving forward.’”
“You’ll have a hard time convincing me that one person’s drop of blood is worth any one of those cows,” he said.
And while I agree with him that no cow is worth someone losing their life over, it wasn’t the BLM that threatened violence against Bundy and his supporters – it was them.
The BLM were out there enforcing several court orders after more than two decades of Cliven Bundy refusing to pay around $1 million in grazing fees. At what point is enough, truly enough?
If we set a precedent that idiots can threaten violence against law enforcement officials who are trying to enforce the law, then those lunatics win.
But now I’m curious what Bundy and his supporters’ “defense” will be. This whole time they’ve claim that the federal government has no authority to enforce federal laws in Nevada. But now the local country sheriff believes that Bundy should be held responsible for the standoff. He also essentially admitted that he feels Bundy has been in violation of federal laws by allowing his cattle to graze on federal lands without paying the required fees to do so.
Though now that Bundy and his supporters have been empowered by many within the conservative media, I’m curious to see how a second attempt to hold him accountable for his crimes will go.
