Nevada Sheriff: Cliven Bundy ‘Must be Held Accountable’ for Standoff Against Federal Agents

nevada-ranch-wannabeSo much for ignoring that “overreaching federal authority” now, huh?  It seems even Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie (a local law enforcement official) believes that Cliven Bundy is not only guilty of violating federal laws when he allowed his cattle to illegally graze on federal lands, but that he “must be held accountable” for encouraging (and allowing) his supporters to aim guns at federal agents and police.

Gillespie said that he had spoken with Bundy and his family prior to the April confrontation and warned them that any protest should be done so peacefully.

Though he says the family crossed the line when they allowed armed supporters to aim guns at law enforcement officials.

“If you step over that line, there are consequences to those actions. And I believe they stepped over that line. No doubt about it,” Gillespie said. “They need to be held accountable for it.”

He also criticized the BLM’s handling of the situation.

“I came back from that saying, ‘This is not the time to do this,’” he said. “They said, ‘We do this all the time. We know what we’re doing. We hear what you’re saying, but we’re moving forward.’”

“You’ll have a hard time convincing me that one person’s drop of blood is worth any one of those cows,” he said.

And while I agree with him that no cow is worth someone losing their life over, it wasn’t the BLM that threatened violence against Bundy and his supporters – it was them.

The BLM were out there enforcing several court orders after more than two decades of Cliven Bundy refusing to pay around $1 million in grazing fees.  At what point is enough, truly enough?

If we set a precedent that idiots can threaten violence against law enforcement officials who are trying to enforce the law, then those lunatics win.

But now I’m curious what Bundy and his supporters’ “defense” will be.  This whole time they’ve claim that the federal government has no authority to enforce federal laws in Nevada.  But now the local country sheriff believes that Bundy should be held responsible for the standoff.  He also essentially admitted that he feels Bundy has been in violation of federal laws by allowing his cattle to graze on federal lands without paying the required fees to do so.

Though now that Bundy and his supporters have been empowered by many within the conservative media, I’m curious to see how a second attempt to hold him accountable for his crimes will go.

It’s time to arrest those gun freak terrorists. They believe it’s okay to aim guns at law enforcement; something that would ordinarily get a person killed.

        That’s pronounced, “CHEEEEEEESUSAH!”

      • CherMoe

You ass … don’t you use roads? Do you have firefighters? Are there agencies that protect you against bad food and vaccinations to prevent you from dying? You would be the first one in line for a welfare check (as most red states collect the most) and Social Security, but you don’t want to pay the price for civilization. Come to think of it, an ass has more brains. The “heavily-armed” thugs are people like you. Our government has more restraint than the idiots down on the farm there.

      • strayaway

Most government services you mentioned are or can be conducted by state and local government in accordance with the 10th Amendment. How about the federal government restraining itself to the delegated powers and responsibilities it has as mentioned in the Constitution?

      • Paul Julian Gould

They’ve got the deed and the claim to that land (they is actually “we” as it’s owned and managed in trust for the people) Collecting fees for services rendered is pretty much free enterprise 101… thought you folks were all about that…

      • strayaway

Put a lien on his property if he doesn’t pay what the court orders. That isn’t as messy as militarized swat teams. Waco was a bad and unnecessary precedent. Nevada was formed to add to non-slave states. Part of the deal was that the federal government kept deed to much of Nevada’s land. I have no idea why the federal government still holds title to most of that land or what delegated power allows it to do so but that is a separate issue from collecting from Bundy.

      • Brian

The law is the law, regardless of what you believe. Bundy refused to follow it.

      • strayaway

I think that we are in agreement on that. Perhaps you misread what I wrote.

      • cravin moorehead

        Aren’t you the simple one.

Who paid for the wars that took texas from Mexico?

How did we pay for the Louisiana Purchase?

Who paid for the troops that stole the land from the Native Americans?

Want to be a “fundamentalist?” Learn history, first.

      • strayaway

Proclaiming yourself a history expert, I’m surprised you are not defending the Aztec Empire which Spain conquered in about 1520. That was before the Mexican revolution took the land from Spain in 1810 and the US sided with Texan independence in 1846. Texas was part of Spain for about 390 years, Mexico for 36 years, and the US for the better part of 168 years yet you seem to side with President Antonio López de Santa Anna. The Louisiana Purchase was paid for in cash yet very little of that purchase was retained as federal land. US taxpayers pay for our troops. There is a federal obligation to defend this Country albeit there have been misuses of our military. Eurasian diseases killed more Indians than the US military.

      • cravin moorehead

I made no such proclamation. I do, however, proclaim you to be an moron.

You have demonstrated your ability to copy words from Wikipedia. Good for you.

None of those words have anything to do with my post.

All that you have done is point to the fact that you are mentally challenged, and have no relevant facts upon which you can base an argument.

        You smell republican.

I will no longer respond to you, as I have no interest in conversing with a mental dwarf.

      • strayaway

I thought you wrote “Learn history, first”. Implying that you knew something about history. Although you seem number phobic, all of those dates do relate to your expressed contempt for this Country. Name calling, rather than facts or numbers is your forte. You cannot imagine how chagrined I am to find out you won’t be responding with more vacuous posts.

      • Michael D. Rich

        bla bla bla… go away!

    • Stephen Barlow

      I’d givethem a choice:

      A) voluntarily surrender all weapons and plead guilty to the max for gun felonies, on National television or

      B) get martyred and buried in the desert without a stone.

The same for those “open carry shoppers”. ID them from facial recognition software and security footage, then SWAT them in their homes, take their children into protective custody and let every one know that armed insurrection is UnConstitutional.

Wanna change America VOTE! Get elected and VOTE where it counts!

      • gian keysTOOEASY flat mom

        im digging those choices!!!
        ,,,,can we combine ” a” and ” b”?

  • Fair is fair.

Funny how these idiots with guns were allowed to point them at law enforcement but a bunch of unarmed student protesters got shot by the Ohio National Guard at Kent State. Law enforcement should have blasted the shit out of these gun nutz. Live by the gun, die by the gun.

    • Stephen Barlow

I kind of agree. WACO and Ruby Ridge were preventable tragedies, but not because of Government holding back.

    • Catey Hamilton

I actually agree, too. By the government basically engaging in a ‘two dogs barking through the fence’ contest, and then being the ones to go running with tail between their legs, anyone else with a large enough group of armed protesters will do the same. They’ve set a dangerous precedent that if you have a gun, the government won’t attack because it’ll make them look bad.

  • cravin moorehead

The person in that photograph should be hunted down and arrested for threatening a Federal Agent.

He has NO authority to intercede in ANY legal action. He’s a criminal.

    • gian keysTOOEASY flat mom

not according to crybaby idiot NICK who posted above

    • We have seditious criminals running the House bordering on terrorists and this guy is the same except not in his mind like the House majority.

    • Haight

This person lives in my area, and don’t for one second think that the feds aren’t watching him. They’re just dotting their “I”s and crossing their “T”s before they take action. They want no mistakes when they start rounding these yahoos up.

  • Nick

Stopped reading at “allowed his supporters to aim guns at agents” while the BLM and other Feds had snipers aiming at everyone’s face the whole time, I bet nobody can produce a single picture of a fed agent being aimed upon. Their ROE(rules of engagement for you dummies) is to fire at the threat of lethal force such as being aimed at. So there would have been shots fired had a single person aimed a gun at any law enforcement

    • Sue Roediger

it would seem that Gov’t agents exercised restraint ,. there are photos and the Feds are going to get the guys one at a time.

    • Brian

The feds have the law on their side. Bundy has rhetoric.

    • cravin moorehead

The reason that you didn’t see photographs of Federal Agents, point guns at the terrorists (That’s right. That’s what those clowns were) was because…..THERE WEREN’T ANY AGENTS POINTING GUNS AT ANYONE! GOT IT, STUPID?

  • Stephen Barlow

SHERIFF? How many drops of COP blood? Way too little and WAY TO LATE!!

Gillespie is as guilty of those murders and the illegal detentions of citizens as the UNAUTHORIZED ARMED INSURRECTIONISTS.

  • Eg Kbbs

Even from the conservative side, you swiftly pursue justice or it will encourage others. (and have we forgotten the Salt Lake City shootings soon afterwards?)

Yesterday ad on Facebook was for youtube video of BLM agents with tasers and dogs said to be assaulting the crowd at Bundy. But watched the film and the crowd repeatedly approached the officers in a manner which fully justified the officers in defending themselves.

In the video, the officers were strongly outnumbered and proper to temporarily pull back. Likewise, I thought the feds and other police were wise to avoid provoking a firefight by pulling back with the idea of picking up the Bundy gang one by one at a later time. But the clock is ticking.

    • Paul Julian Gould

Justice delayed is justice denied… another truism.

  • As a republican and responsible Gun owner I cant wait until this Man and those Self Proclaimed Militia Idiots get whats coming to them from the Criminal Justice System! I have spent my whole adult life defending our freedoms and the Rule of Law as rooted in the United States Constitution and to see our constitution trampled on by a bunch of “Constitutional Extremist” is frightening to say the least.

This is my second post on your site dealing with this idiot and I feel very welcome here even though I am a republican. The overwhelming responses I got received from your readers was refreshing and very constructive.

Lets continue to work together to keep our nation free and protect society from idiots such as these. The government cant institute a blanket firearm confiscation policy because of the Second Amendment and its apparent if it tried both Democrat and Republican would stand together to fight against such abuses.

That being said we can go after those who have shown themselves to be untrustworthy with firearms and shown they will abuse the right! By pursuing criminal charges. I get so tired of hearing from these people “What part of shall not infringe do you not understand” People like these think they can break the law and commit a cold blooded act of murder with a firearm and invoke Second Amendment immunity! Not on my watch!

  • Michael D. Rich

Nothing more than a racist freeloader… pay your debts, or get off our taxpayers land…and take you gang of thugs with you.

  • Gregory Hinton

if they were of color this would have been over with a long time ago.

  • xbj

Ruby Ridge x10000000, and it can’t come soon enough.
