How anyone can trust Donald Trump still completely baffles me. One of the most obvious frauds I’ve ever witnessed, it’s still mind boggling to sit here and think about the fact that there are tens of millions of people in this country who actually believe Trump’s an honest and trustworthy person.
While I know that’s a disheartening reality to realize, I think it’s important to remind people that, while Trump’s supporters are very vocal, they’re still the minority. Most Americans see right through Trump’s non-stop lies, conspiracies, and propaganda.
A point reiterated by a new poll from ABC/Washington Post showing that the majority of Americans trust former FBI director James Comey to tell the truth more than they do this “president.”
By a 16-point margin, 48-32 percent, Americans find Comey more credible than Trump.
That margin becomes even more significant when you read further into the poll and realize most Americans don’t exactly have a “favorable” view of Comey at only 30 percent. So it’s not as if the debate over who’s more honest between Comey and Trump comes down to a popular person vs. an unpopular one — neither men score very high on the percentage of Americans who view them “favorably.”
Americans also opposed Trump’s decision to fire Comey by 14 points, 47-33 percent.
When it comes to Robert Mueller’s investigation, by a 2-1 margin, 64-32 percent, Americans support the special counselor looking into this “president’s” business activities. Then by a 23-point margin, 58-35 percent, Americans favor looking into whether or not Trump paid various mistresses to be silent about their affairs.
In other words, despite all of Trump’s whining, complaining, conspiracies, and never-ending claims of a “witch hunt” — as well as Fox News serving as his own version of state-run media to peddle his absurdity on their most-viewed programming — the fact remains that the vast majority of Americans still:
- Trust Comey more than they do him.
- Support Mueller’s investigation.
- Believe that it’s fair game to look into whether or not he paid “hush money” to his mistresses.
- Oppose his decision to fire Comey.
So, when Trump decides to fire Mueller (which I believe is only a matter of time) these numbers tell us that the majority of Americans are going to oppose the move and likely view it as this “president’s” attempt to obstruct justice and hide potential crimes he felt Mueller’s investigation was on the verge of discovering.
Though, in my opinion, the best part of this poll is that, by a substantial margin, more Americans believe Comey to be honest and trustworthy than they do Trump. While I’m not sure he’ll ever see this poll (though it wouldn’t shock me if he did considering how much he obsesses over cable news), I can guarantee that if Trump does it’s going to send him into another rage spiral that will likely culminate with one of his many Twitter tantrums whining about “fake news.”
Because as we all know, in the delusional minds of Trump and his supporters, any news that’s negative about him, no matter how factual, is always… always “fake news.”
