For anyone who might have been wondering if former Republican congressman Jason Chaffetz was going to be less of a scumbag after quitting Congress, you all can rest easy, because it’s clear he’s going to be every bit as terrible in his new job as a Fox News analyst as he was during his tenure in the House of Representatives.
After all, nothing says “I’m an upstanding and credible individual!” quite like abruptly quitting your job as a United States congressman — in what many felt was Chaffetz’s cowardly attempt to avoid dealing with Trump’s scandals — then immediately becoming a paid employee at America’s most watched conservative entertainment channel.
Well, during an appearance on Trump’s favorite cable morning show, Fox & Friends, the former congressman actually praised the ‘transparency’ of the Trump family — while making sure to bring up the Clintons as well.
“When you walked in we talked a little bit about the fact that Jared Kushner has released 11 pages of testimony he is going to deliver before Congress later this week. And you said, regarding Jared Kushner, Republicans need to grow a backbone,” host Steve Doocy stated.
“Yeah, Republicans need to get a backbone. Every time the Democrats say they need to call up Jared Kushner or Donald Trump Jr., then call up Chelsea Clinton. Call up the Clintons,” Chaffetz replied. “There we have an inspector general who issues a report stating an actual crime. You have Bill Clinton, the former president, taking millions and millions of dollars from countries that Hillary Clinton, who is then going in and doing business. So every time a Democrat says I got to talk to Donald Trump Jr., go up and bring Chelsea Clinton in there, because she was involved in the Benghazi situation.”
“I think the Trumps need to actually get a lot of credit for openness and transparency,” he added. “They didn’t delete their emails, they provided their emails. When they wanted to talk to them, they said you can talk to us. And yet, when we did the same thing with the Democrats they gave us a stiff arm every single step of the way.”
That’s what you call saying a lot of stuff that sounds good to those who want to hear “the Clintons are awful and the Trumps are tremendous!” There’s just one problem: it doesn’t make a damn bit of sense.
For starters, the FBI spent over a year investigating Clinton’s emails and concluded that nothing criminal took place. Republicans like Chaffetz like to keep bringing up her emails as if there wasn’t an extensive federal investigation into them.
As far as Benghazi, Republicans spent nearly four years investigating the 2012 terrorist attack and ultimately concluded last summer that none of the asinine conspiracies they had push for years were true.
And I’m not sure what Bill Clinton being paid to give speeches — something many former presidents and politicians do — has to do with any of this. George W. Bush gives paid speeches, I didn’t see people making a huge deal about that when his brother Jeb was running for president. And is Chaffetz really trying to argue that Bill’s paid speeches represented a conflict of interest — but Trump’s businesses don’t?!
Last I checked, the American people have seen decades worth of Clinton tax returns, while Trump continues to refuse to release his.
As far as his claims that Democrats gave them the “stiff arm,” he’s kidding, right? Hillary Clinton spent over 11 hours being grilled by Congress about Benghazi.
Would Trump ever do that? Hell, the better question might be, would Trump even have the stamina for that?
I doubt it.
As far as bringing up Chelsea Clinton, he’s out of his damn mind. That’s just his petty way to try to defend Trump Jr.’s controversial meeting last year by evoking another Clinton, making sure to do so in vague terms as opposed to specifically mentioning why Congress would need to talk to her.
Regardless, I’m sure she’d be happy to talk with them about the A-rated Clinton Foundation she’s never taken a salary from that donates 88 percent of the money it raises to charitable causes.
But to claim that the Trumps have shown tremendous “transparency” is an absolute joke.
The only reason Trump Jr. published those emails was because he knew The New York Times was about to. Trust me, if they didn’t have proof that this meeting took place, we still wouldn’t have heard about it.
I’ve lost count of how many secret meetings or communications Trump’s associates have had with people who have ties to Russia that weren’t ever publicly revealed until after someone in the media broke the story.
And how does Chaffetz know the Trumps haven’t deleted any emails?
That’s right, he doesn’t know.
Forgive me if I don’t put it past a man who has repeatedly lied about releasing his tax returns, and who recently settled a $25 million lawsuit accusing him of fraud, to delete emails he doesn’t want federal investigators finding or being able to recover.
Then spare me this b.s. that they “wanted to talk.” Again, the only reason why Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort are testifying before Congress is because The New York Times broke this story.
By the way, testimony that’s not going to be publicly broadcast. Because “transparency,” I guess?
The bottom line is, the Trump family and their associates have lied at every turn, repeatedly attacked news reports factually reporting about their lies, and are constantly trying to undermine the credibility of anyone who dares to call them out.
As far as Donald Trump goes, here’s a man who’s fired the head of the FBI (who then testified under oath that he tried to obstruct justice), who’s now currently trying to bully Attorney General Jeff Sessions into resigning so he can appoint a replacement who he’ll use to fire special counselor Robert Mueller — someone of whom he’s clearly terrified.
I’m not going to sit here and try to make an argument that the Clintons are the most transparent people on the planet. I’m sure there’s a lot of private information they wouldn’t want the public knowing about. Though I’m sure that goes for most politicians and people in general.
However, for anyone to say the Trumps deserve credit for being “transparent” is ludicrous. We’re dealing with a group of people who act like an organized crime syndicate, led by a man in Donald Trump who’s exhibiting just about every textbook sign of someone who’s guilty of something and desperately trying to do everything he can to conceal the truth.
