You know, I kind of had a feeling this was coming. In fact, over the last several days I’ve actually seen it pop up a few times on various Internet discussion boards and comments sections. You see, it seems as if – in a desperate attempt to hide the bigotry, racism and ignorance that fuels a lot of the Republican party – some conservatives are now trying to claim that Donald Trump really isn’t a Republican, but rather a Democrat.
Because of course he is.
And while this sounds completely absurd, it’s essentially what CNN commentator and conservative radio host Ben Ferguson said while discussing the controversial remarks made by the current GOP front-runner.
“Donald Trump is not some big GOP Republican and some people are trying to act like he is,” Ferguson said. He also went on to claim that he’s “given more money to Democratic candidates than Republican candidates.”
Now, while I’m sure that plays right into the hands of conservatives desperately looking for anyway to coverup the fact that Trump is essentially exposing the Republican party as a bunch of anti-immigrant bigots and racists, the statement itself makes absolutely no sense.
Ignoring his political donations for a moment, the indisputable fact remains that, despite Trump’s disgusting comments about Mexican immigrants, he’s skyrocketing up the Republican presidential polls. So, he can call himself whatever he wants, but that doesn’t change the reality that what he’s saying is being heavily embraced by conservative voters.
And I can guarantee you this much, if a Democratic presidential candidate was out there calling most Mexican immigrants criminals and rapists, they sure as heck wouldn’t be climbing in the polls. In fact, it would be political suicide.
Not only is Ferguson’s logic completely ridiculous, but it’s not even accurate.
According to Politifact’s research:
So, while he has donated to Democrats in the past, he’s given nearly twice as much to Republicans overall – and since 2012 he’s almost exclusively donated to the GOP.
But it goes to show you how desperate Republicans are becoming when it comes to Trump and how he continues to expose the racism within the GOP. When you’re at such a point that some conservatives are literally trying to argue that one of the GOP frontrunners, who’s being supported by conservative voters as he skyrockets up the polls, is actually a liberal – well, that’s such a ridiculous notion that it’s Onion-worthy. While I’ve even joked that he’s so ridiculous that it does almost seem like he’s a Democrat pretending to be a Republican just to mock how absurd many conservatives can be – even if it were true – that doesn’t change the fact that it’s working.
And while it might be true that this is all just a short blip on the radar in a campaign that’s still a very… very long way from culminating, to be honest, I’m not seeing a whole lot of weaknesses when it comes to Trump.
The truth is, in many ways, Donald Trump is the perfect Republican candidate.
