For years Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) was one of the main faces of the GOP-led investigations into the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attack. So I don’t want to hear any Trump supporters whine when it comes to comments he made Sunday to Fox News’ Chris Wallace where he effectively said this “president,” despite his repeated claims of innocence, is acting more like someone who’s most definitely guilty.
“The president’s attorney frankly does him a disservice when he says that and when he frames the investigation that way,” Gowdy stated. “If you look at the jurisdiction for Robert Mueller, first and foremost, what did Russia do to this country in 2016. That is supremely important and it has nothing to do with collusion.”
While Trump’s lawyer has denied speaking for this “president,” I can’t imagine John Dowd’s call to end Robert Mueller’s investigation was made without Trump’s consent. As I’ve stated plenty of times before, Trump’s not someone who looks highly upon people who act independently. He wants “yes-men” who are going to say and do what he wants them to do — then tell him how brilliant that decision is.
Then the congressman spoke a little more directly to Trump, targeting the behavior of this “president” and how he should welcome an investigation to clear his name if he has nothing to hide.
“If the allegation is collusion with the Russians, and there is no evidence of that, and you are innocent of that, act like it,” Gowdy said.
“If you’ve done nothing wrong, you should want the investigation to be as fulsome and thorough as possible,” he added.
Gowdy’s comments echo what many of us have been saying for quite some time. Despite constantly claiming that he’s done nothing wrong and this investigation is nothing more than a “witch hunt,” Trump’s acting like the textbook definition of a guilty person who’s terrified that investigators are inching closer to finding out the truth about him and what could very well be criminal behavior.
As Gowdy said, if Trump’s truly an innocent man, as he’s claimed for over a year, then he should welcome an investigation that he should feel supremely confident will clear his name.
Personally, I know if people were out there making many of the same accusations that have been levied against Trump — including treason — and I was actually innocent of doing what these folks have said they believe that I did, I’d encourage as many investigations as people wanted to have into my behavior — because I’d have nothing to hide.
Except, of course, that’s not what Trump’s done.
For more than a year he’s been trying to obstruct the FBI’s investigation into his campaign, his associates, and slander those conducting these investigations. With each unhinged, conspiracy-driven outburst like what we saw this past weekend, all Donald Trump does is make himself appear more and more guilty.
As Rep. Gowdy said, if Trump’s actually innocent, then it would behoove him to act like it.
Though as most of us already know, the reason Trump isn’t acting like someone who’s innocent — is because he’s likely not.
