One of Trump’s Morning Tweets is a Perfect Example of How He Distorts the Truth Even When He’s Not Lying

At this point, if the day of the week ends in a “y,” there’s a good chance Donald Trump will be going on some sort of Twitter tirade around 7 am after watching Fox & Friends and getting riled up about whatever nonsense they’re covering.

Such as this morning when, after sending out another garbage conspiracy tweet about (who else) Hillary Clinton and her emails, he tweeted some good news from a new Quinnipiac University Poll:

On the surface, that tweet is a rare one for Trump in that it’s 100% true. Yes, there’s not a single lie in this tweet. Quinnipiac conducted a new poll which found 66% of people feel the economy is “Excellent or Good,” and that is, in fact, the highest number ever recorded by this poll.

Of course, that’s not the whole story. Since Trump didn’t bother linking this poll full of “great news,” here it is.

From the story:

Bright Economic Outlook – With Credit to Obama

A total of 66 percent of American voters say the nation’s economy is “excellent” or “good,” up from 63 percent December 19 and the highest positive rating for the economy since the Quinnipiac University Poll first asked this question in 2001. Another 33 percent say the economy is “not so good” or “poor.”

Trump’s policies are helping the nation’s economy, 37 percent of voters say, as 29 percent say his policies are hurting the economy and 30 percent say these policies are not making much difference.

But 49 percent of voters say former President Barack Obama is more responsible for the state of the economy, while 40 percent say Trump is more responsible.

Yes, that’s right — 49 percent of voters say Obama is more responsible for the current state of the economy, whereas 40 percent believe Trump deserves more credit. But if you listen to Trump’s bullshit over the past several years, Obama’s jobs numbers were fake and his economy was on the verge of collapse. So of course he’s not going to make note of that little tidbit from this poll, or even bother linking it. Trump knows that all his supporters want to hear is that he’s been “fixing Obama’s mess” and that the economy is booming because of it.

In fact, looking at this poll even further, it’s actually extremely bad for Trump.

He did manage to get a majority of people to say he’s “intelligent” (53-44%), but 57% of those polled believe he’s not fit to serve as president, compared to only 40% who say that he’s fit for the office. Furthermore, 39% gave him an “F” when grading his first year in office and another 17% gave him a “D,” compared to only 16% who gave him an “A,” 16% for “B,” and 11% for a “C” grade.

We also can’t forget that his current approval rating in this particular poll sits at 36%, compared to 59% who disapprove of his job performance.

Then there are his grades on character traits, which are absolutely abysmal. From Quinnipiac:

President Trump’s grades on most character traits are down significantly since his first post-inaugural poll January 26, 2017, as voters say:

  • 63 – 34 percent that he is not honest;
  • 59 – 39 percent that he does not have good leadership skills;
  • 59 – 38 percent, that he does not care about average Americans;
  • 59 – 39 percent that he is a strong person;
  • 65 – 32 percent that he does not share their values.

Yes, the guy who constantly whines about “fake news” and urges his followers to “believe me!” every time he opens his mouth is viewed as “not honest” by 63% of voters polled, while another 59% said he doesn’t have good leadership skills and doesn’t care about average Americans.

Lastly, they didn’t make note of it in the article on the poll, but buried deep in the poll results you’ll find this gem:

Do you think that President Trump has repaired the United States’ reputation around the world or damaged the United States’ reputation around the world?

66% of those polled said Trump’s damaged the United States’ reputation around the world, compared to only 26% who say he’s “repaired” it. Not good numbers for somebody whose entire campaign was built around promising to “Make America Great Again!” and “restore our standing” as a world leader.

All in all, this was a perfect example of how Trump and Fox News distort the truth even when they’re not necessarily lying about what it is they’re saying. Trump sent out this tweet bragging about poll numbers on how voters view the current state of the economy knowing full well that he didn’t have to link the actual poll or provide any other results from it. His followers will see it and immediately use it to say, “See! Trump’s been cutting all the red tape and fixing the mess Obama got us in! Even the polls are finally realizing it!” And not a single one of them will give a damn about what the rest of the poll said, because nothing will change their minds on how “terrible” Obama was for the nation.

Funny enough, the person who came out looking best in this particular poll was Barack Obama. It just goes to show how lucky we were to have competent leadership in the White House up until January 20th, 2017.
