While there are many depressing aspects of Donald Trump becoming our next president, one of the things that bothers me most is, literally within his first few days in office, Republicans are going to dedicate most of their time to trying to erase anything related to Barack Obama’s eight years in office. Within a few weeks, it’s going to be like much of his presidency never existed.
And we all remember how “good” things were going in this country before he was elected, don’t we?
As I’ve said before, I’m usually not someone to say “I told you so,” but I certainly plan on doing that as often as I can to all the people who voted for him throughout Trump’s presidency. While his supporters were duped into believing this con man, the majority of Americans (let’s not forget he’s going to lose to Hillary Clinton in the popular vote by probably 3-4 million votes once it’s all said and done), recognized that he’s woefully unfit and unqualified to be president.
Well, Trump and Republicans are already plotting a way to screw millions of his own supporters over by repealing a regulation President Obama signed requiring companies to pay overtime to workers who made under $47,000.
House Republicans are currently in the process of making lists of regulations that fall within their time frame and could potentially be repealed early next year. One of the major ones they’re eyeing is Obama’s overtime rule that requires companies to pay time-and-a-half to employees who make under roughly $47,000.
Considering exit polls showed roughly 41 percent of Trump supporters make $50,000 or less per year, once this regulation is repealed, that means roughly 20 million of the people who voted for him will no longer be required to be paid overtime by their employer.
Literally within just a few days of officially being president, with one stroke of his pen, Trump’s going to strip away extra pay for millions of people who so eagerly and proudly supported him — and millions of others as well.
Oh, you were looking forward to that time-and-a-half pay for overtime work? Yeah, sorry — not anymore. But it’s okay, right? After all, what American family making less than $47,000 annually needs extra money? Clearly, Trump and the Republican party are focused on helping the middle class by ripping away sizable chunks of possible income that could have helped millions of families enjoy a better quality of life.
I can’t help but notice they don’t seem overly eager to repeal those tax loopholes wealthy individuals like Trump used to not pay taxes for nearly two decades. Wasn’t that also one of Trump’s promises, to rewrite the “unfair” tax code so that people like him can’t take advantage of ridiculous loopholes? Yeah, good luck seeing that happen anytime soon.
Making sure middle class Americans don’t get overtime pay is much more of an issue plaguing this country than tax evasion by the wealthy which costs this country nearly half a trillion dollars every single year.
So, to all those millions of Donald Trump supporters making less than $47,000 a year who now won’t be required to receive overtime pay from their employers, all I have to say is — I told you so.
This is what happens when millions of people are conned into believing that a man who made a lot of his money by often screwing over anyone he had to just as long as it benefited his own interests actually cares about anyone but himself.
