By now most people reading this have probably heard that Donald Trump is ordering National Guard troops to the U.S./Mexico border. This is apparently his response to his repeated failure to make Mexico or the U.S. taxpayers fund his pointless border wall.
Spoiler Alert: This is completely pointless.
For starters, Trump’s not personally ordering the National Guard to the border, he’s requesting that state governors send troops to the border.
Even if some states decide to accommodate his request, National Guard troops couldn’t do much of anything besides call Border Patrol agents or local law enforcement if they identify suspected illegal immigrants. Our laws prevent them from enforcing domestic laws, which includes apprehending immigrants trying to enter the country illegally.
So, no, Trump’s not going to “secure the border with our military” as he’s claimed the past couple of days.
He’s going to waste hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to send National Guard troops to the border to essentially sit there, do some surveillance, and contact local law enforcement officials to apprehend anyone they believe to have entered the country illegally.
For the record, both Barack Obama and George W. Bush made similar moves during their time in office. So, despite Trump acting like this is something that’s never been done before, it’s not exactly uncommon.
And just like when both Bush and Obama made similar moves, National Guard troops will have little to no impact on illegal immigration.
However, unlike previous presidents who’ve made similar moves, Trump’s decision is driven by a hissy fit he’s throwing after watching a few Fox & Friends segments about illegal immigration, along with the fact he can’t force either Congress or Mexico to pay for the wall he promised he was going to build without a plan to do so.
Basically, since he can’t fulfill one of the biggest lies of his campaign, he’s now trying to make himself look less incompetent and still “strong on border security” by doing something his predecessors did — that accomplished almost nothing besides wasting millions of taxpayer dollars.
Though I’d like to remind everyone of the White House’s response to reports last year that claimed Trump was thinking about using the National Guard:
“There is no effort at all to round up, to utilize the National Guard to round up illegal immigrants,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said of the report, according to pool reports.
“That is 100% not true. It is false. It is irresponsible to be saying this.”
While those comments were made just over a year ago, it’s another example of a story this administration has called “false” or “fake news” — even “irresponsible” — that ultimately turned out to be true. Simply because Trump waited a year to make this move doesn’t negate the fact that, this time last year, it was already being discussed as those reports stated.
This entire situation epitomizes Trump’s lies, incompetence, and propaganda.
Since he never had a plan to make Mexico pay for his wall, and he can’t force Congress to do so, this is the best way he’s identified to pander to his base trying to make himself look “strong on illegal immigration” even though the move is effectively pointless and has been done by previous presidents.
To make matters worse, I’m fairly certain Trump’s too incompetent to know that National Guard troops can’t round up and apprehend illegal immigrants. So I wouldn’t be all too surprised to see some rage tweeting soon once he realizes that they won’t have the power to detain illegal immigrants where he calls for Congress to give troops the power to do so.
Because that’s what Trump does when he realizes his attempts to be a dictator continue to be blocked by pesky things like our Constitution and laws — he whines about it on Twitter.
Make no mistake about it, this is nothing more than Donald Trump doing what he’s spent most of his campaign and “presidency” doing: pandering to his base.
Even though, at the end of the day, he’s not doing anything that hasn’t already been done before, and will do nothing more than waste hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. All because he built a large part of his campaign on building a pointless border wall — “paid for by Mexico” — that he had absolutely no way to actually build or make our southern neighbors fund.
To put it bluntly, this is Trump doing everything he can to cover up for the massive lie he sold to his supporters about his border wall because he knows the vast majority of them are gullible enough to believe anything he says.
