Republicans should be very thankful their supporters don’t like to think for themselves. This inability to form their own thoughts and ideas makes them very easy to manipulate and control. It’s how you get millions of poor and middle class Americans to vote for policies which hurt them, yet benefit the rich.
Simply yell out the GOP talking point of, “Tax hikes kill jobs!” — and Republican voters instantly, and often without question, react with hostility and fear against anyone who might hint at the possibility of raising taxes.
In short, these people are often ridiculous.
Remember “Umbrellagate?” When an image circulated around the internet of Marine holding an umbrella over President Obama’s head as he gave a speech in the rain?
Republicans were outraged. How dare President Obama be so arrogant as to require a proud Marine to hold an umbrella for him. Can’t he hold his own umbrella? What a disgrace!
Except—there were easily found images of Republican presidents having umbrellas held over their heads by members of our military as they gave speeches. That fact had little impact on lessening the right-wing outrage over that image of President Obama having an umbrella held over his head by a Marine.
And just like last time, this outrage is completely moronic.
Why? Well, besides the fact that no one should care if a president happens to put their feet on the Oval Office desk — the article I’ve linked above shows images of President George W. Bush and President Gerald Ford with their feet on the Oval Office desk.
And guess what? Nobody cared.
The only reason I’m even writing about it is the sheer ridiculousness of it. It’s absolutely pathetic the depths at which Republicans will stoop to attack President Obama on anything.
And the most absurd part of these attacks is that with almost every single one of them — a Republican has done it before.
He’s the “Vacationer in Chief!” — Bush took far more vacation days.
He’s a tyrant who abuses the executive order! — Reagan issued far more executive orders.
He’s presided over the largest deficits in history! — Actually we’ve seen our largest reduction in deficits since just after World War II.
And now it’s Obama putting his foot on a desk.
I wish Republicans would just be honest. Stop faking this “outrage” over these stupid things and just tell the truth — he’s half black, and that is what bothers them.
And that’s the one thing these Republicans from the past haven’t been.
