Republican Louie Gohmert Desperately Wants A Holy War With Iran

GohmertRemember how I’ve previously said that part of the far right’s love affair with Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel has a lot to do with fulfilling religious prophecies, bringing about the return of Jesus, and not actually caring about people of other faiths? Well, Congressman Louie Gohmert is getting sick and tired of President Obama (who may or may not be the anti-Christ to him) not bombing Iran and starting a regional war that would cause millions of deaths, thereby finally setting in place the events necessary for Jesus to come back – if you actually believe in the End Times prophecy stuff that many fundamentalist Christians do. These prophecies include the need for conversion of Jews to Christianity, the destruction of Israel, and a whole lot of people dying.

Now, Louie Gohmert isn’t a stranger to making insane and incoherent statements, even on the floor of Congress. His latest bout of verbal diarrhea came on a far-right radio program where he lamented the fact President Obama has continued to seek a nuclear deal with Iran instead of wiping the country off the map. Via Right Wing Watch:

During an appearance on yesterday’s edition of “Washington Watch,” Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, told host Tony Perkins that “we need to encourage this administration to go take out Iran’s nuclear capability” instead of pursuing negotiations: “I think it’s time to bomb Iran.”

“We need to make clear to Iran: You can play these silly games with our president that buys into them and our secretary of state, but the American people aren’t buying it and you’re going to pay a price,” Gohmert said.

“I’m hoping and praying the president will realize, despite the agenda he has that has put Christians in jeopardy around the world, that he will not want to leave the Democratic Party so devastated that they won’t recover for many decades,” Gohmert continued, “that maybe he’ll start being more helpful to Israel instead of slapping them around as an unwelcomed visitor and start treating them like a friend. And maybe once he starts doing that he’ll realize we do need to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities that we know of and anything that they move to fix, we bomb that as well.” (Source)

While many people may simply point to this latest bizarre, rambling statement from Louie Gohmert and say that this is just another crazy Republican, his remarks illustrate how far right Christianity and End Times prophecy are influencing GOP politicians. This isn’t a fluke or occasional correlation between Republican policy and fundamentalist Christian beliefs; these are politics and religious prophecies intertwined to create opposition to any sort of peace deal with Iran.

Here he specifically quotes Joel Rosenberg, who is an influential End Times prophecy writer and is quite comfortable with the Republican National Committee. Rosenberg even addressed them on their trip to Israel last month, an event attended by Rick Santorum and, you guessed it, Governor Bobby Jindal.

“I’m just grateful that Netanyahu had announced there will be no two-state solution because, as you mentioned, [End Times author] Joel Rosenberg, he loves to point out in his favorite book, Joel, that Chapter 3, God says I am going to bring down judgment on nations that divide Israel. So I’d kind of hate to be a part of the nation that divides Israel,” he added. (Source)

Louie Gohmert isn’t some religious lunatic preaching over the AM airwaves at 2 AM on a humid South Carolina night to a handful of insomniacs and truck drivers. This guy is a member of the United States Congress and he’s not alone in wanting an apocalyptic nuclear war with Iran, or the creation of a theocracy right here in the United States. With the recent letter to Iran signed by 47 members of Congress and one Governor Bobby Jindal who will do anything to curry favor with fundamentalist primary voters, it becomes more and more obvious that the control of the Republican Party is held by lunatics like Tom Cotton and Louie Gohmert.

The official ‘House Howler Monkey’ and other congressional Republicans and conservative pundits are fond of criticizing the Obama Administration’s foreign policy for being “too diplomatic”, as well as for not touting America’s “exceptionalism” and reminding all other nations of their inherent inferiority on a daily basis.

Perhaps these pompous, self-righteous politicos don’t really know what diplomacy means:
1 : the art and practice of conducting negotiations between nations
2 : skill in handling affairs without arousing hostility : tact

Threatening to bomb or invade a sovereign foreign power is NOT diplomacy, despite what these right wing war-mongers believe.

What’s even more scary of course is if someone of this ilk gets into the executive branch of government. True negotiations would be eliminated and of course hostilities would be upgraded. I’m not sure the country could handle a pseudo theocracy.
