Once upon a time, as a young adult who was raised as a conservative, I used to vote Republican. That was decades ago, and since then, I’ve realized how absurd the GOP has become and I’ve since become a progressive independent.
During those years since I left, the GOP has slid further and further toward the radical fringe and jingoistic talking points that make George W. Bush look like a brilliant statesman in comparison.
Now a new Reuters poll of Republican voters shows just how completely insane the party has become. The poll, which was taken after the last debate, found that Donald Trump is the candidate they would trust with America’s nuclear weapons.
Donald Trump is the Republican candidate most trusted to manage the economy, deal with foreign leaders and serve as commander in chief, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll of Republicans conducted after the party’s third debate.
And more Republicans would trust him with the nation’s nuclear weapons than most of the rest of their party’s presidential primary field.
In terms of overall support, Trump was favored by 31 percent of Republicans polled by Reuters/Ipsos in an online survey conducted Oct. 28 to Nov. 2 that had a credibility interval of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points. Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson placed second with 18 percent. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida and former Governor Jeb Bush tied for third place with 10 percent each. (Source)
I wish I could say that I was making this up, but this is a legitimate poll from Reuters. While I still consider Donald Trump to be little more than a political entertainer and a troll of sorts, this demonstrates how out of touch with reality the Republican base is.
Can you imagine Donald Trump or Ben Carson in charge of America’s foreign policy or nuclear codes? Imagine if voters stay home and one of those two are elected as president.
If you’re surprised that Republican voters trust either of these two clowns with our nuclear weapons, don’t be. These are the same voters who cheered for wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and think that the ultimate solution to ending radical Islamic terrorism is turning the Middle East into a nuclear wasteland.
This isn’t a fluke; 0ver the last couple of decades, we’ve gone from the conservative party of Reagan to a Fox News zombie electorate who would think that Ronnie Raygun was a socialist gun-grabber if he was alive and running for office today.
Now here’s the problem: the same people who think that Donald Trump or Ben Carson are the people they would most trust with our country’s nuclear weapons are going to vote in 2016. They’re motivated by Fox News and the rest of the conservative media, and they fully believe that Democratic Socialism is the same thing as Nazi Germany.
I’ve found that no matter what you do, these folks cannot have their hearts and minds changed. You can’t explain to them that Jade Helm was simply a military exercise or that after all of these years, President Obama isn’t going to take their guns. The only recourse is to vote, because you know they sure as hell will.
