Rick Santorum Gets Humiliated by Chris Wallace on Fox News for His Comments About the Pope (Video)

rick-santorum-popeAs we all know, Fox News is essentially nothing but an echo chamber of conservative rhetoric and propaganda. The network is really nothing more than the media division of the Republican party. It really is laughable to me that millions of Americans honestly believe it’s a “fair and balanced” news organization.

That being said, every once in a while Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace will call out one of his Republican guests. Yesterday morning, Wallace had GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum on for an “exclusive” interview and absolutely schooled him on comments he made last week where he said Pope Francis needs to leave the talk about climate change to the actual scientists.

“If he’s not a scientist, and in fact he does have a degree in Chemistry – neither are you,” Wallace said. “Somewhere between 80 and 90 percent of scientists who have studied this say that humans, human activity, contribute to climate change.”

“So, I guess the question should be, if he shouldn’t talk about it, should you?,” he asked.

“We have to make public policy with regard to the environmental policy,” Santorum said before being cut off by Wallace.

“But you’re not a scientist, you said leave the science to the scientists,” Wallace shot back.

It was a good back and forth that’s worth a watch. I don’t often praise Fox News hosts, but Wallace really hammered Santorum on his comments. Not only did he make sure to mention the fact that the pope does, in fact, have a degree in science, but that 80 to 90 percent (using his figures, although it’s actually more) of the world’s scientists all agree that humans are causing climate change.

But this all goes back to Santorum’s original comments about how the church has gotten it wrong on science in the past. That’s a statement which is actually very accurate.

Too bad the way he used his analogy doesn’t hold any water.

In the past, when the church “got it wrong” on science, it’s because they were ignoring scientific facts, not embracing them. It’s Santorum – and most of the Republican party – who are the “religious ones” rejecting science while Pope Francis is trying to change the trend of the Catholic Church finding itself on the wrong side of history when it comes to accepting scientific facts.

If anything, Pope Francis coming forward with his belief that humans are contributing to climate change is a huge divergent from the past when the church often condemned any sort of science that might dare to take “power” out of the “hand of God.” And being that quite a lot of people seem to believe that God controls the weather, therefore humans couldn’t possibly be causing climate change, the church recognizing that humans do have that power is basically unprecedented.

But, as we all know, Republicans like to pick and choose which facts they believe or what parts of history they want to recognize. Though all Santorum really ended up doing with these comments was prove just how little many Republicans understand about Christianity – and get humiliated by Chris Wallace in the process.

“We have to make public policy with regard to the environmental policy,” Santorum said. Justifying being able to talk about it. And obviously there’s no need to understand it, or to be factually correct about anything, in order to merely make policy.
