I sometimes wonder what it must be like to be a conspiracy nut. Imagine living in a world where everything is an evil plot by the government, aliens and Jews who are constantly plotting to make your life hell because you’re “awake” and by Walmart Jesus, you aren’t gonna be taken alive when Obama’s UN special forces come to impose Agenda 21 and take your guns?
Oh sure, we all have a laugh now and then when Glenn Beck suggests that the measles outbreak is part of a government plot or when a Tea Party group falls for a satirical story claiming that Common Core turns kids gay. That’s the nature of media sources that cater to the political fringes; whether it be left-wing or right-wing, everything that goes wrong is part of some horrible plot to take something away from you, their beloved and aware reader.
While left-wing media tends to dwell on conspiracies involving industry, finance or science, especially biotechnology, right-wing media has been almost completely consumed with fear and hatred of President Obama. Combine one part racism, one part xenophobia, one part ignorance and stir in a little paranoia and you have the recipe for a profitable little conservative media bubble.
All it takes is for one blogger or fake news site to create a rumor, and dozens of others will repeat it enough times until the story makes it across the Internet, sometimes all the way to Fox News. The latest story isn’t a new one, but it has been recycled well enough that prominent right-wing conservative media is all over it. That story is the preposterous conspiracy of President Obama finding a way to bypass the 22nd Amendment and run for office again in 2016. Sure, it sounds pretty crazy but don’t you remember when a lot of liberals worried that George W. Bush would try to do the same thing?
Anyhow, Joseph Farah over at WND (or WingNutDaily as I like to call it) and Rush Limbaugh don’t think it’s a crazy idea and have gone on the record suggesting that President Obama could do so if he wanted to.
There’s simply no organized opposition to Obama’s illegal, criminal actions and behavior. He’s getting away with all of it. There are no serious repercussions. No political price. No major media opposition. Few judicial rulings that worry him. Not one political, religious or social institution that is holding him accountable – least of all the Republican Party.
A handful of vocal critics on the Internet and talk radio point out his violations of the law, American tradition, the concept of constitutionally limited government with a system of checks and balance, not to mention decency and basic morality. But there is no operating political mechanism to stop him from doing anything and everything he wants to do.
Maybe America’s last best hope to prevent the kind of despotism feared when the 22nd Amendment was approved following Franklin Roosevelt’s fourth election to the presidency is a Hillary Clinton. (Source)
Yes, you just read that right. Mr. Farah actually welcomes the thought of Hillary Clinton winning the White House, because as much as the right-wing hates Hillary Clinton, they hate the bizarre and ridiculous idea of President Obama holding a third term even more. Of course, there’s that pesky 22nd Amendment which prohibits him from doing that, but never let facts or laws stop the progression of a viral conspiracy story.
Section 1 of the 22nd Amendment states as follows:
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term. (Source)
Snopes.com traced the rumor back to a website called AmericanNews.com which originally ran a story that claimed President Obama was going to force Congress to allow him to have a third term. In case you’re wondering, this is a right-wing website that makes Fox News look like a pinnacle of journalistic integrity in comparison and caters to the most paranoid and gullible people on the far right, with great success. As I’ve said many times before, fear sells – and the irrational paranoia and hatred toward President Obama will make some people believe anything about him, facts and Constitution be damned.
