By now most people have probably heard about Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump basically calling for a robust national database (among other measures) that would track all Muslims. It’s a notion that’s taken straight out of the pre-WWII “Nazi playbook.”
You might have also heard about the Muslim-American Marine who destroyed Trump’s fascist ignorance by tweeting out a picture of his military ID, stating that he already carries around a “special ID”:

That’s absolutely awesome.
The one thing I took away from this Marine’s tweet wasn’t that it was a brilliant response to right-wing ignorance, but rather how I realize in moments such as these that many Republicans don’t think it’s possible to be Muslim and an American. Despite the fact that there are over six million Muslims in this country, it’s perfectly acceptable within the GOP to openly peddle irrational hate-filled rhetoric and fear-mongering against Muslims. In fact, it’s encouraged.
Not only that, but there are Muslims all over this country who put their lives on the line fighting fires, policing our streets and serving in our military. To say nothing about the Muslim teachers, doctors and nurses who dedicate themselves to making a difference and saving lives.
Yet this irresponsible, disgusting rhetoric emanating from the Republican party is putting the lives of these American Muslims in danger. It is now becoming more and more common to see conservatives all across the country harassing and ridiculing Muslims, or vandalizing various Islamic centers or mosques.
This is not what America is about. It’s absolutely pathetic that one of our nation’s two largest political parties seems to find it acceptable to put American lives in danger just for the sake of playing petty partisan politics. Because whether these bigoted conservatives like it or not, there are millions of Muslims in this country and many of them are Americans.
I am ashamed that Republicans are allowed to represent my country. While they cling to their Bibles, fly their flags and talk a lot about the Constitution – most of them clearly don’t have a damn clue what true American values are about. They claim to be “proud patriots,” while seemingly hating everything that makes this country great.
But I would like to salute Sergeant Tayyib Rashid, a Marine corp veteran, for not only his service to this country, but for taking on the bigotry that’s become commonplace within the Republican party. While his tweet was simple, it was incredibly effective.
Thank you Sergeant Rashid, you’re an American hero.
