It’s been an excellent few days for alumni from The Daily Show exposing how fraudulent the Republican party has become. On Sunday night John Oliver absolutely crushed Donald Trump over the giant fraud that is “Trump U.” Then last night, Samantha Bee destroyed Republicans and the media for how they’ve handled the presumptive GOP presidential nominee over the last year.
When it comes to Trump’s success, there’s plenty of blame to go around. The media shoulders a great deal of that blame considering they’ve given billions in free advertising to his campaign over the last year. Bee mocked this fact early on in her segment when she pointed out that, instead of giving airtime to a speech Hillary Clinton was giving, MSNBC and CNN chose to — show an empty podium for nearly an hour leading up to a speech Trump was scheduled to give.
She also took aim at media pundits who, early on, literally laughed off the idea that Trump could actually win the nomination, with many suggesting that there was no way that could happen.
“The only way that could happen is if people like you give him $3 billion in free advertising,” Bee said, sarcastically laughing.
She then set her sights on Republicans who, for months, called Trump everything from a cancer (Rick Perry) to a con artist (Marco Rubio), with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan saying that Trump’s call to ban Muslims was not a representation of the values of the party.
Of course, every one of those Republicans has now publicly come out in support of the “cancerous con artist who doesn’t represent the party’s values” Donald Trump. Though she did mock Ryan’s “endorsement” being released, not to a major media outlet, but in an op-ed in the Janesville, Wisconsin GazetteXtra.
“Come on Speaker Ryan! Whatever happened to the guy who had this to say about Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims,” she asked, playing his remarks from a few months ago where he sternly condemned Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims by saying it wasn’t “what the party stands for.”
“He’s right — Trump isn’t what Republicans stand for,” Bee stated. “He’s what they bend over for.”
That’s what you call a proverbial “drop the mic” moment.
I love the way Samantha Bee addresses the various issues she covers on her show. While I’m sure it’s a bit over-the-top for some, I think she often does a brilliant job of turning up the sarcasm to just the right level to emphasize how absurd or ridiculous something is. She did an absolutely fantastic job with this segment by not only exposing how pathetic the media has behaved, but also dismantling the spinelessness and hypocrisy of Republicans who went after Trump in some very specific and personal ways — only to cowardly tuck their tails between their legs and get behind him as the de facto leader of their party.
