While Sen. Ted Cruz’s campaign did better than I think many thought it would, the fact that he came in second place (a very distant second), is a testament to just how ridiculous the Republican party has become. Let’s face it, Donald Trump winning the nomination is embarrassing. That’s definitely a “low point” for the GOP. But the fact that Cruz, someone who’s loathed by seemingly everyone who’s ever had to deal with him (including Republicans), was the next closest challenger is really just as bad.
Rational Republicans like John Kasich and Jeb Bush (sadly, they’re now what qualifies as “rational”) never stood a chance. Even Sen. Marco Rubio, a fairly right-wing religious radical, was never the actual threat to Trump that many within the GOP thought he could be.
So, on Monday, Samantha Bee decided she would issue Cruz a “fond farewell,” of sorts. And by “fond farewell,” I mean she hilariously mocked what a wretched person he is.
After airing several clips of her calling the senator from Texas some rather interesting names over the last few weeks, she pulled out her “Cruz Thesaurus” in mourning over the fact that, following the suspension of his campaign, she won’t be able to use some of the colorful words written inside.
“You guys, we were only on page three,” Bee quipped. “Now I’ll never get to ‘Husky Romulan’ or ‘Human Twilight Zone music.'”
Later she played a clip of “Cruz’s final hug” – which was actually a scene from the movie the Creature From the Black Lagoon.
“Godspeed you terrifying fundamentalist Swamp Reagan,” she said.
She then took a jab at John Kasich, who also dropped out of the race this week, hitting him on his well-known beliefs against women’s rights.
“Hope you enjoyed your eggs, since you won’t be controlling mine,” she said after playing a clip of Kasich doing what he had become infamous for during his campaign – eating a whole heck of a lot of food.
Though to top it all off, she had singer Michelle Branch come out to play Goodbye to You while a “tribute video” of awkward moments from Ted Cruz’s campaign played in the background.
The whole segment was fantastic. I highly encourage everyone to take a few minutes to check it out.
I know I’ve said it before, but Samantha Bee really needs to have a bigger role in liberal politics – if she wants one, of course. While no one will ever be Jon Stewart, her new show is about the closest thing I’ve seen thus far. I’m a huge John Oliver fan, but I still feel like Bee’s style is closer to Stewart’s at the height of his success with The Daily Show.
Either way, Samantha Bee shouldn’t be too depressed. I’m sure it won’t be long until Ted Cruz is back in the news. After all, I’m certain he’ll be using the next four years to gear up for his 2020 presidential campaign that we all know is coming.
