Since her show debuted a few months ago, I’ve been telling everyone who will listen that they need to make Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal on TBS part of their weekly routine. I’ve called her a mix of Jon Stewart and John Oliver. I like Trevor Noah, but I think Bee would have been a much better choice to replace Stewart when he retired from The Daily Show last year.
Week after week, she just seems to hit home runs when she’s discussing Donald Trump and the hypocrisy of the Republican party.
Like this week when she perfectly ripped into Republicans for cowardly ducking questions about Trump and his joke of a presidential campaign. I’ve been telling people for a while that they need to pay attention to what’s going on right now because we may never see anything like it again. A presidential candidate steamrolled to his party’s nomination — only to be shunned by a good chunk of those within his party who seem to be in denial about what their party has become.
What I liked most about last night’s segment was that Bee ran down the history of the GOP when it went from the “party of Lincoln” to embracing blatant southern, white racism during Richard Nixon’s presidential campaign in what’s known as the “Southern strategy.” She also brought up a point I wrote about a few weeks ago where I showed how many well-known racist Democrats flocked to the Republican party once they realized the Democratic party was embracing equality and it was the GOP that was rushing to pander to the racist whites who felt abandoned. Infamous racists and segregationists such as George Wallace, Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms, three men who had all joined the GOP after Democrats had supported desegregation, the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act and ending bans on interracial marriage. As I’ve asked Republicans before, if the GOP wasn’t embracing racism, then why did three men who were notorious racists leave the Democratic party to become Republicans right after Democrats backed civil rights?
I’ve still yet to receive a rational answer to that question.
After Bee ran down a brief history of racism within the Republican party, she made sure to clarify that she doesn’t think all Republicans are racists.
“I am not saying all racists are Republican or that all Republicans are racists,” Bee stated. “They are absolutely not. I am saying that for half a century, the GOP, in order to win elections, has relied on an uneasy coalition of two opposing interests [she showed a picture of a white racist rube standing next to a professionally dressed ‘fiscal conservative’].”
She then played clips from the show Breaking Bad where she hilariously compared the deal Republicans made with these racists to that of Walter White’s “ill-advised partnership with white supremacists” in the show who ultimately ended up screwing him over.
Bee’s main point was that it’s disingenuous for Republicans to act as if Donald Trump is someone who doesn’t represent the values of their party when the 13+ million people who voted for him are many of the same vile, ignorant bigots that the GOP has been pandering to for decades.
“Trump isn’t desecrating the Republican Party,” Bee quipped. “He’s just peeling back the glossy exterior to reveal the hideous symbiont that’s been lurking there for decades.”
That’s what a lot of people have been saying over the last few weeks. While it’s easy to go after Trump for the things he says and does, the truth is, even if he were to vanish tomorrow, the people supporting him would still exist. Then all these folks would ultimately do is sit around and wait for the “next Donald Trump” to run for public office.
