I’ll admit, I have somewhat of a “love/hate” relationship when it comes to social media. While its purpose and value is undeniable (especially as it relates to getting information out to large amounts of people), the downside is that it’s given any idiot with a computer and Internet access a voice to say practically whatever sort of asinine nonsense they feel like. It’s how ridiculous conspiracy theories like the Jade Helm nonsense from a few weeks ago somehow manage to become “mainstream political issues.”
That being said, I think one of my favorite aspects of social media happens on Twitter when some group of fools tries to get something trending, only to see it hilariously trolled by people mocking them. That’s exactly what happened when Confederate flag supporters tried to get #SouthernLivesMatter, a clear rip-off of #BlackLivesMatter, trending.
In other words, a bunch of white Southerners are very upset that after 150 years the flag that represents racism, slavery and the largest treasonous uprising in American history is finally being treated how it should have been a century and a half ago – as a symbol of shame and embarrassment for this country.
Well, their little hashtag effort didn’t go quite to plan as many people who oppose the Confederate flag took to Twitter to mock these folks in some very clever, yet sometimes overly stereotypical (but still hilarious) ways.
Here are some of the best ones I’ve seen:
When the police tow away the cars in your yard, that's when you know #southernlivesmatter.

Hey, remember when we owned people and lost a treasonous war against America? Yeah, that was awesome. #SouthernLivesMatter

Alright, I’ll stop with that last one because it was my favorite.
This is all just so ridiculous. It’s amazing to me how delusional many in the South are about the Civil War, what it was about and the racism tied to the Confederate flag.
The bottom line is, these people live in a world of rampant cognitive dissonance. History has shown repeatedly that all the states which comprised the Confederacy have been on the wrong side of history when it comes to almost every major issue in this country, especially pertaining to civil rights. Yet, despite the overwhelming evidence that proves the “South” has always been on the wrong side of history, many of these people seem to live in a world of willful ignorance or psychological denial.
But I would encourage everyone to head on over to Twitter and add your own thoughts on what you think should go along with #SouthernLivesMatter, because I know there are plenty of you out there who can come up with some rather creative and hilarious responses for these knuckle-dragging buffoons.
