Can we please stop acting as if the majority of Trump supporters care about anything else but blindly supporting this national embarrassment and probably the worst human being ever elected ‘president’? He’s belittled POWs, mocked a man with disabilities, used rhetoric that’s inspired Nazis, been praised by the KKK, called a Gold Star widow a liar, bragged about sexually assaulting women, and has now endorsed a credibly accused child molester.
If they haven’t turned on him now, they’re never going to.
Well, at least not until he does something that directly makes an impact on their lives in an extremely negative way that even they can’t ignore — then some of them will care.
And even then, if they can’t deny that he did something that had a negative impact on their lives. I’ve seen firsthand that when faced with the reality that something he supports will screw them over, many Trump supporters will do just about everything they can to avoid blaming him for it.
See, that’s how the minds of most Republicans work. They don’t care how awful someone is, or how other people’s lives are negatively impacted by the terribleness of that person, just as long as it doesn’t negatively affect them personally.
For example, Caitlyn Jenner. She voted for and supported Trump even after all the horrible things he had done — until he banned transgender Americans from being allowed to serve in the military. Once Trump targeted a group of Americans to which Jenner identified with, then suddenly she cared.
The truth is, for Trump supporters, they don’t care if he tried to obstruct justice, colluded with Russia during last year’s election, wants to rule like a dictator, defends Nazis, embarrasses the country on a daily basis, alienates our allies, or about anything else deplorable that he does.
They. Simply. Don’t. Care.
The only thing Trump supporters care about is that he’s “president.” It doesn’t matter to them what he had to do to get there, or how he acts while he’s in that position, just as long as he’s in charge of this country. He can collude with as many enemies as he wants, attack as many Gold Star families as he pleases, or endorse as many child molesters as he feels are necessary to “Make America Great Again” — because In Trump They Trust.
It’s why I’ve said for a very long time now that Trump’s not leading a political movement, he’s a leading a cult. The majority of his supporters are factually devoid, brainwashed followers who honestly believe that there’s this massive, international conspiracy working to bring down Donald Trump. They think anything negative about him is “fake news” (even after it’s proven true), and no matter how many lies or conspiracies Trump pushes that get soundly debunked by reality, or how many times he contradicts himself, they continue to believe that he’s an honest person and that anyone who proves that he’s not is “out to get him.”
I honestly believe that Trump could go out and give a speech at one of his rallies while standing next to Vladimir Putin and Roy Moore and fully admit that he colluded with Russia during last year’s election; he believes Moore is a child molester but thinks people should vote for him anyway; and he’s sexually assaulted multiple women — and his support among Republicans, especially his voters, wouldn’t drop more than a couple of percentage points.
It’s time people face the fact that Trump’s supporters simply don’t care what he says or does, no matter how disgusting or awful. For all intents and purposes, it’s really sort of pointless to look at these folks as Americans who value their commitment to this nation because their loyalties don’t lie with this country, our Constitution, or our government — they lie with Donald J. Trump.
