While there are many reasons why people believe Donald Trump has been compromised by Russia and is being blackmailed by Vladimir Putin, in my opinion, one reason above all others stands out: the fact that he refuses to say anything negative about Russia or Vladimir Putin.
It makes absolutely no sense why someone who’s repeatedly proven that he’ll attack anyone — from a former Miss Universe, Gold Star parents, our allies, and even some random union leader from Indiana — would go out of his way to avoid saying anything negative about a country that attacked us and the president who ordered that attack.
Especially from the so-called “America first president.” Yet that’s the reality in which we’re all currently living.
CNN’s Jake Tapper called out that point on Wednesday following news that, despite blunt instructions from advisors not to congratulate Putin on his most recent re-election “victory,” Trump did so anyway.
“President Trump, to this day, has said nastier things publicly about me, Don Lemon, Chuck Todd, Meryl Streep and the cast of ‘Hamilton’ than he has a former KGB operative and current human rights represser Vladimir Putin,” Tapper said.
Donald Trump can call Robert Mueller’s investigation a “witch hunt” all he wants, but as Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) recently said, if this “president” wants people to believe that he’s innocent, then he needs to stop acting like someone who’s guilty.
Had Trump strongly condemned Russia’s cyber attack against this country during the 2016 election, then proceeded to respond quickly with harsh sanctions, a call for U.S. intelligence to guard against further attacks, and comments that made it clear we will not tolerate anymore Russian attempts to interfere in our democracy, then I think a lot of people would feel differently about Trump and whether or not he’s currently being blackmailed by Russia.
Of course, that’s not what’s happened.
Not only has Trump often spoke highly of Putin over the last few years, even defending him from allegations that he’s murdered rivals and journalists during a 2016 interview with Bill O’Reilly, but each and every time he’s been given the opportunity to condemn Russia for attacking this country, he’s either ignored the chance — or publicly attacked the sources who did call out and criticize Russia’s behavior.
For anyone to deny that Trump’s behavior toward Russia is incredibly bizarre, if not outright suspicious, takes willful ignorance or a level of naivety that I can’t even comprehend.
There’s a reason why a man, who as Tapper accurately pointed out, has publicly criticized everyone from high-ranking politicians, to allies, to movie stars, flat-out refuses to say anything negative about a country that attacked us or its leader who ordered that attack.
The issue now is finding out why that is, because the answer is possibly the most important issue facing this country right now.
