As most are probably well aware, Pope Francis has been in the United States for the last few days. To say it’s been quite the spectacle is an understatement. This is quite possibly the most progressive pope many of us have ever seen (if not ever) whose very Christ-like attitude concerning many issues has even brought praise from people who are typically harsh critics of the Catholic church and religion in general. While he’s not perfect, it’s clear that Pope Francis is trying to move the church forward to be more inclusive, modern and aligned with the teachings of Jesus Christ.
But what this pope has really done, at least in this country, is he’s exposed what hypocrites many within the Republican party are concerning Christianity. Pope Francis has preached about income inequality and taking care of the planet, and warned against the greed that seems to be consuming many parts of our society; meanwhile, many on the right have bashed him for being “too liberal.”
It’s truly been amazing to see a pope who’s trying to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ get bashed by members of the party that often champions itself as the “party for Christian values.”
The truth is, most Republicans just use religion to manipulate voters.
Take for instance a scumbag like Sen. Ted Cruz. This is a guy who could easily pass as a leader of some creepy religious cult. If you ask me, he epitomizes nearly everything that’s wrong with the GOP. He’s also a prime example of what I mean when I say that most Republicans really don’t get what actual Christianity is about.
For example, while Pope Francis made a large part of his speech to Congress about humanity, peace and being kind to one another – Cruz gave a speech at a “values summit” where he threatened to kill Iran’s Ayatollah if he’s elected president.
After repeating his usual talking point about promising to shred the Iran Deal on “Day 1,” Cruz said that if the Middle Eastern nation doesn’t cease its efforts to obtain a nuclear weapon, he might “have to help introduce him [the Ayatollah] to those 72 virgins.”
He also made “jokes” about how President Obama and Hillary Clinton should both be in prison – along with many Democrats.
First, how dumb does Ted Cruz have to be to promise to rip apart the nuclear deal nearly a year and a half from now before he even has a chance to see if it will be successful? For the sake of argument, what if January 2017 rolls by and Iran and the U.S. have drastically improved relations, Iran’s rhetoric against Israel has subsided and all signs point to the deal doing what it’s supposed to do? Would he still rip it up? And if so, how stupid would you have to be to do that?
Not only that, but it’s absurd to see elected officials using this sort of dangerous rhetoric. How could anyone expect a jackass like this to lead this country when he’s making “jokes” like these? Besides, aren’t fools like Ted Cruz usually the first ones to pretend to be outraged whenever some sort of hostile or aggressive rhetoric comes out from the Iranian government? How is what Cruz said any different? He’s essentially saying that not only will he rip up a deal Iran has made with the United States, but he’s basically going to say to them, “If you don’t do what I tell you, I’m going to kill all of you.”
Yes, because that’s the sort of dialogue that really brings about meaningful and healthy diplomatic relationships between nations.
Ted Cruz is an absolute moron for blatantly threatening a nation which Republicans have been claiming for over two decades is going to obtain a nuclear weapon – yet still hasn’t. Hell, Benjamin Netanyahu testified in front of Congress in the 90’s that Iran would have a nuclear bomb by 1999 – sixteen years ago. Yet here we are, with 2016 quickly approaching, and Iran appears no closer to building a nuclear weapon than they were 20+ years ago.
This is the sort of rhetoric we need to rid our government of completely. If the time ever comes that we need to go to war with Iran, then so be it. That should be the last thing that anyone, anywhere around the world wants. War should always be a measure of last resort.
It’s obvious that not only do Republicans want to go to war with Iran, but many almost seem excited about the prospects of doing so. When idiots like Ted Cruz are making jokes about the possibility of sending thousands of Americans to die in a war that will make the one we started in Iraq look like a cakewalk, it only goes to show the small-minded and pathetic nature of those who cheered his comments.
