Whenever Ted Cruz decides to run for president, his father is going to be a gold mine for anyone covering politics. Because as much of a right-wing radical as Ted Cruz seems, his father Rafael takes it to a whole other level.
Whether it’s been him claiming that there’s no scientific evidence behind evolution, that communism and evolution go hand in hand, his son is destined by God for greatness or his desires to send “Obama back to Kenya,” Rafael Cruz has made plenty of outlandish comments.
He was recently asked by Faith and Liberty host Dave Garrison if President Obama had a plan to take our guns as part of some “worldwide views.” He answered, “Well, of course, you have got to realize that is all about control. You look at history, Stalin took out the guns, then killed twenty million people; Mao took out the guns, then killed fifty million people. Every society where government has taken the guns away from the population, then they’ve used them against the population.”
Except of course in countries like Canada, England, Australia and several other industrialized nations where gun regulations are much more restrictive than they are here.
There’s one other question I’d like answered: President Obama has 2 1/2 years left, when exactly will this “massive confiscation of guns” begin? Conservatives have been claiming Obama was out to get their guns since even before he was inaugurated, yet it’s never even come close to happening. How long, exactly, can they continue to perpetuate this lie before conservatives say to themselves, “Hmm, it hasn’t happened yet, maybe we’ve been lied to?”
And if that comment wasn’t absurd enough, then Rafael Cruz claimed that if liberals had their way we’d get rid of the Bill of Rights.
After stating that he believes President Obama and Fidel Castro are “two peas in a pod” out to destroy God, Cruz then said, “As a matter of fact, I think if the left had their way, they would do away with the whole Bill of Rights.”
Ironic considering it’s Republicans who seem to loathe our First Amendment rights to freedom of (or from) religion. It’s conservatives who’ve used religion to justify segregation and oppose civil rights throughout history and continue to do so today. Ever since women were given the right to have control over their own bodies over 40 years ago, conservatives have been trying to deny them that Constitutionally protected right. Heck, it’s 2014, and homosexuals are still struggling to be granted their equal rights from conservatives who continue to try to use religion to deny them what the Constitution guarantees them.
So, tell me again, which party would rewrite our Bill of Rights if they had their way? Does Cruz really believe if it were left up to conservatives they’d leave out the words “Christian” or “Christianity” from our Constitution entirely? Does he really think conservatives would grant freedom for all religions, or just Christianity?
In fact, history shows us that it’s liberals who are always on the right side of history when it comes to our Constitution and it’s conservatives who are always trying to deny people their equal rights.
It’s like I’ve pointed out before. If you take the “strongly Republican” states today, then go backwards in history, they’re the same states that opposed the Civil Rights Act, desegregation, women’s suffrage and, of course, slavery. The same states that, today, oppose same-sex marriage, the right for a woman to have control over her own body and want to legalize discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Then again, when do conservatives ever let facts or reality stand in their way?
One can only imagine the radical, fear mongering nonsense Rafael Cruz will come up with by the time 2016 rolls around.
