Tennessee County Drafts Resolution Begging to be Spared from God’s Wrath

Blount County Commissioner Karen Miller

Blount County Commissioner Karen Miller

It’s rare that I’m ever rendered speechless over something I’ve seen or read, but that’s exactly what happened when I read a story out of Tennessee that seemed like it had to be some bizarre form of satire.

Apparently the Blount County Board of Commissioners is being asked to consider a resolution begging that God spare the county, and the region surrounding it, from his wrath following the Supreme Court’s June decision that legalized same-sex marriage in the United States.

You know what, nothing I say can even come close to describing the actual insanity of this proposal put forth by Commissioner Karen Miller, so I’ll just let it speak for itself:

Whereas, the Governor, Attorney General, and ALL WE Blount County Legislators have sworn an oath consistent with the moral Law of God (“So Help Me God”) to uphold the Constitution of Tennessee and the Constitution of the United States; and Whereas, the fulfillment of this oath, in the American tradition, may not be read to contradict the written Constitution, Justice, Reason and higher Natural Law.

Federal judges have once again usurped powers not delegated to them, and have violated Reason, the Rule of Law and Natural Law by purporting to strike down State laws and acts of the People recognizing and protecting Natural Marriage.

WE adopt this Resolution before God that He pass us by in His Coming Wrath and not destroy our County as He did Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring cities. As the Passover Lamb was a means of salvation to the ancient Children of Israel, so we stand upon the safety of the Lamb of God to save us. WE adopt this Resolution begging His favor in light of the fact that we have been forced to comply and recognize that the State of Tennessee, like so many other God-fearing States, MAY have fallen prey to a lawless judiciary in legalizing what God and the Bible expressly forbids.

Where to even begin.

First, the whole “so help me God” part added to various “oath of office” pledges is entirely voluntary. Even presidents aren’t required to say those words or use a Bible as part of their oath of office. To put it another way, those words have nothing to do with our Constitution.

Then I couldn’t help but notice that her entire rant against the Supreme Court only serves to showcase the fact that she (like many Republicans) has no idea how the Constitution works. In fact, using her “logic” I guess she feels bans on interracial marriage should still be legal considering they were struck down by the Supreme Court in basically the exact same way.

And the last part is just insanity. It’s amazing to see these fools act as if God’s going to unleash some sort of wrath on this country because we legalized same-sex marriage, considering:

  • There’s a very long list of “biblical laws” we don’t follow in this country.
  • Divorce is spoken of negatively much more often in the Bible than homosexuality.
  • Twenty nations have legalized same-sex marriage, including Canada – over a decade ago

A person really needs to be willfully ignorant to believe the kind of nonsense these folks constantly blather on about. And make no mistake about it, people like Karen Miller are the epitome of ignorance.

If I wasn’t an American, I’d be scared shitless about what America is becoming.

I am an American and am scared shitless of what this country is fast becoming. The GOP has officially met the sociological definition for fascism

Being an American yourself, you should be even more scared by what we’re becoming.

It’s actually quite brilliant. She is doing what people have been asking Kimmy to do all along: do your job and beg God’s forgiveness for surviving in a secular society.
“begging His favor in light of the fact that we have been forced to comply”
This is the kind of religious freedom law that states should be asking for, considering they answer to a higher power. Everyone gets to do their job without fear of God’s wrath because God would never smite someone who has begged for forgiveness, right?
    Brilliant out.

You forgot that they invoke Sodom and Gomorrah, despite the fact that their inhospitable natures and desire to harm those different to them make them more like the Sodomites of old than people who enjoy a bit of in-and-out through the rear door now and again.

Perhaps this woman should consider (Matthew 6:5-6)

“And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, I wonder that this “christian woman” identifies only with hate and fear and retribution. She kinda forgets too, that if her god is omnipotent, her behavior is already observed and noted.
    Isaac Asimov said it best,
“Again and again, it’s almost not necessary for us to do good. It’s only
necessary for us to stop doing evil, for goodness sakes.”
