Texas Conservative Group Organizing “Catch an Illegal Immigrant” Game

young-conservativeIt’s amazing to me how often I read stories pertaining to something conservatives are saying or doing where I have to make sure it’s not some kind of satire.  It’s a true testament to how absurd the Republican party has really become.

Case in point, the story I ran across where the Young Conservatives at the University of Texas at Austin are organizing a “catch an illegal immigrant” game.  What this “game” consists of is labeling several people around campus as “illegal immigrants” and allowing people to “catch” these individuals for a $25 gift card.

Yes—this is a real thing.

The rules as described by the group are as follows:

“There will be several people walking around the UT campus with the label “illegal immigrant” on their clothing.  Any UT student who catches one of these “illegal immigrants” and brings them back to our table will receive a $25 gift card.”

Who in their right mind believes this is a “good” idea?  Then again, this is the same group that hosted an “affirmative action” bake sale where they charged different prices based on the consumer’s race.

Here’s a rule: If Republicans don’t want to be called the party of racism, they have to stop doing crap like this.

To take the very serious issue of how to sensibly handle illegal immigration and turn it into some sideshow “game” that does nothing but mock illegal immigrants is reprehensible.  When you add this “game” along with their ridiculous bake sale that seemed organized by some “white rights” group, all these kinds of shenanigans do is highlight the blatant racism that’s rampant throughout the Republican party.

But of course, if you ask conservatives, they adamantly deny that racism is an issue within their own party.  And that makes perfect sense, right?  After all, the bake sale was just showcasing how affirmative action actually demeans minorities and the “let’s go hunt down an illegal” game is meant to raise awareness of how illegal immigration impacts our daily lives.  Sure.

And the kicker is, this isn’t the first time that “Young Conservative” groups at colleges in Texas have played this ridiculous “game.”

These people are juveniles.  They cling to this idea that if they don’t blatantly use racist terms and simply spin it to sound like some kind of “public awareness message,” that people will be dumb enough to actually believe them.

And sadly, for millions of conservatives, they actually do.

This “game” is an embarrassment to the real immigration issues we face in this country, and the fact the University of Texas at Austin has allowed it to happen on their campus is something they should be absolutely ashamed of.
