In case you haven’t heard, Texas Governor Greg Abbott officially brought crazy to the highest office in his state when he ordered the Texas Guard to monitor the activity of the U.S. military.
Why did he do this, you ask? Well, because conservatives have become so paranoid the last few years that there were quite a few in the state who believed that the military exercises being carried out by the U.S. military are all a part of an elaborate plan to invade Texas and declare martial law.
If you’re laughing, I don’t blame you – but this is not from The Onion. Alex Jones-level crazy has officially become mainstream thanks to Abbott.
Well, thankfully not all Republicans in Texas are embracing the insanity as a 16-year Republican veteran of the Legislature, former Rep. Todd Smith, called out Abbott for “pandering to idiots.”
In a letter to the governor, Smith wrote, in part:
Let me apologize in advance that your letter pandering to idiots who believe that US Navy Seals and other US military personnel are somehow a threat to be watched has left me livid. As a 16 year member of the Texas House and a proud patriotic AMERICAN, I am terrified that I have to choose between the possibility that my Governor actually believes this stuff and the possibility that my Governor doesn’t have the backbone to standup to those who do. I’m not sure which is worse.
He also went on to describe these radicals as a “cancer” in the state and the Republican party.
It’s like I’ve said before, there’s a massive difference between the types of Republicans being elected today and the ones from even just a few years ago. This state has gone from electing Democrat Ann Richards as governor, to Republicans George W. Bush, Rick Perry and now Greg Abbott. Over the last 20+ years conservatives in this state have gone from being part of electing a female Democrat to the highest office in our land to choosing someone who just added legitimacy to one of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories I’ve ever come across.
A while back I warned Democrats who were celebrating Rick Perry’s announcement that he wouldn’t seek another term to be careful what they wished for, because his likely replacement would be much worse. And in just a few months on the job, that’s exactly what Abbott has been.
While I’m not really someone who’s an alarmist, I also never thought I’d see the day where the governor of Texas would call upon the Texas Guard to monitor the activity of the U.S. military based on the asinine conspiracy theories being pushed by – as Smith called them – idiots. So I am slightly terrified to see where the Republican party might be headed in a few years if this sort of ludicrous nonsense continues. It’s a sad day not just for Texas, but the entire country, when the governor of one the largest and most populated states in the country is now apparently influenced by people who believe in chemtrails and “false flags.”
I just wish there were more Republicans like Todd Smith calling out the stupidity that seems to be engulfing the GOP.
