Texas Republican Calls Out Gov. Greg Abbott: Stop ‘Pandering to Idiots’

greg-abbott-laughingIn case you haven’t heard, Texas Governor Greg Abbott officially brought crazy to the highest office in his state when he ordered the Texas Guard to monitor the activity of the U.S. military.

Why did he do this, you ask? Well, because conservatives have become so paranoid the last few years that there were quite a few in the state who believed that the military exercises being carried out by the U.S. military are all a part of an elaborate plan to invade Texas and declare martial law.

If you’re laughing, I don’t blame you – but this is not from The Onion. Alex Jones-level crazy has officially become mainstream thanks to Abbott.

Well, thankfully not all Republicans in Texas are embracing the insanity as a 16-year Republican veteran of the Legislature, former Rep. Todd Smith, called out Abbott for “pandering to idiots.”

In a letter to the governor, Smith wrote, in part:

Let me apologize in advance that your letter pandering to idiots who believe that US Navy Seals and other US military personnel are somehow a threat to be watched has left me livid. As a 16 year member of the Texas House and a proud patriotic AMERICAN, I am terrified that I have to choose between the possibility that my Governor actually believes this stuff and the possibility that my Governor doesn’t have the backbone to standup to those who do. I’m not sure which is worse.

He also went on to describe these radicals as a “cancer” in the state and the Republican party.

It’s like I’ve said before, there’s a massive difference between the types of Republicans being elected today and the ones from even just a few years ago. This state has gone from electing Democrat Ann Richards as governor, to Republicans George W. Bush, Rick Perry and now Greg Abbott. Over the last 20+ years conservatives in this state have gone from being part of electing a female Democrat to the highest office in our land to choosing someone who just added legitimacy to one of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories I’ve ever come across.

A while back I warned Democrats who were celebrating Rick Perry’s announcement that he wouldn’t seek another term to be careful what they wished for, because his likely replacement would be much worse. And in just a few months on the job, that’s exactly what Abbott has been.

While I’m not really someone who’s an alarmist, I also never thought I’d see the day where the governor of Texas would call upon the Texas Guard to monitor the activity of the U.S. military based on the asinine conspiracy theories being pushed by – as Smith called them – idiots. So I am slightly terrified to see where the Republican party might be headed in a few years if this sort of ludicrous nonsense continues. It’s a sad day not just for Texas, but the entire country, when the governor of one the largest and most populated states in the country is now apparently influenced by people who believe in chemtrails and “false flags.”

I just wish there were more Republicans like Todd Smith calling out the stupidity that seems to be engulfing the GOP.

What a rare find! A Republican who’s not a stark raving lunatic.

Why would governor abandon largest interest group?

  • Epsilon_Center

Sadly, he no longer holds office and I doubt he could be elected again.

More to this than it seems.
The teahadist control the state party organization. If Jeb is going to get the GOP nomination he has to get past the Perry,Abbott Cruz axis control of the Texas Party machine.
Both the Houston Chronicle and Dallas Morning News are allies of John Cornyn who is the head of the “Bidnezz” Oil Field Wall Street faction. They have been shooting at Abbott at Cornyn request and this faction is the one pushing behind the scenes for the indictment of Perry.
Perry, Abbott and Cruz have an independent fund raising base as crooked as a dogs hind leg separate from the National GOP base.
To secure the nomination of Jeb they have to take to take the teahadist faction out of the leadership of the state party.
If they can get Perry to rat out on his buddies they can regain leadership of the party and then roll over the Libertarian wing at the GOP convention like they did in 2012 thus securing the nomination for Jeb.
This is not Republicans coming to their senses but part of a factional fight in a one party state.Politics is a contact sport here not a morality play.
Karl Rove has been a professional character assassin for over forty years starting with Nixon and is ramrodding the operation for the Bush family.

A lonely island in a sea of stupid.

I see this more of the governor just making sure everything is on the “up and up”. Would you rather he blindly do whatever the federal government tells him to do? Because everything the federal government does is on the up and up right? Because in the real world the federal government told Texas this was a routine training exercise when it’s looking more like an anti-terror and martial law training exercise? There is a lot more to the story than you closed minded tools are willing to let yourselves see. Is it the end of the world, and we are being invaded in Texas? No. We just want to know wtf is going on.

…and just what, dear, did you think the governor was going to learn? That the US Military actually knows what they’re doing?

…or do you honestly believe your wacknut governor?

Dearest Greg is just doing his level best to pander to as many constituencies as possible. All one needs to do is read his letter on the matter at hand. Here in Texas, public servants do not have to be the sharpest tools in the shed to attain high office.

      • Carolina Corpus

        Or be a potus either!

      • Pipercat

        Mission Accomplished!

      • Christoph Bell

To be clear, he does have a law degree from Harvard which is the 3rd most competitive law school in the nation as of now. You don’t have to be a sharp tool to be potus, but our current president is rather bright.

Read something other than Young Conservative from time to time, it is absolute trash.

That’s ok. I’ll laugh for you. Or, at you, in all honesty.

    • Brenda McGill Alterio

      Seek help, son.

      • Rick Clines

All the haters. So funny. I guess us rare folks that don’t blindly believe everything we are told are growing fewer and fewer. Enjoy the lemming population benefits guys. The day you stop asking “why” is the day you give up the right to ask “why did that happen”. I will never apologize for asking why. I find it funny and sad you guys are trying to shame me for asking why. Ignorance is bliss right? Nothing bad could ever happen inside our own borders right? All americans will always do the right thing right? It’s ok, I will fight for you since you are to ignorant to know why you should be doing it yourself. Someone has to…

      • Trisha Dukes

Hi Rick, Thank you for standing up for me. I am a Texan and I do ask why.

    • Evil Genius

So, I’m confused. Should I be watching for black helicopters or black STEALTH helicopters?

  • realist

They are all off there rocker. I see so many pandering to all this paranoid delusional bs. It is quite scary actually as there are enough of them to create a serious uprising in our country. Thats why this liberal believes in the second amendment.

  • Charlee Helms

It’s time for new parties on BOTH sides. The 2 major parties are so busy being “different” from each other that they’re no longer serving their constituents. The time has come to remove Dems and Reps both.

    • JNWesner

Charlee, what exactly have Democrats done to deserve being tarred with this brush? Texas Republicans are the laughingstock of the nation; what Democrats remain have maintained sanity and fiscal responsibility lacking otherwise. And the Democrats protect those who need government support to survive in these economic times. Please choose your targets more carefully.

      • Blaine Smith

You’re funny. Typical liberal stupidity. Those who need government support to survive in these economic times…boo hoo. Hey I thought the economy was thriving in Obamaworld.

      • Carolina Corpus

You elected obama? Need I say more?

  • FD Brian

and I’ll leave this hear for Randy Nichols, he can leave his apology in his reply.

  • AndInThisCorner

And they say gay marriage will bring the end times….seems more likely to be brought about by the complete divorce from reality in politics.

  • MikeO

Yeah, a ‘Texas Republican’ who was thrown out of office by the voters for someone far more conservative. Commenting about someone elected with a 20% margin. Who is the idiot here?

  • Todd Smith – Not bad at all!! See i’ve always known that they are few sane ones belonging to the republican party. The republican party wasn’t always like this too! It’s just infested with stupid clowns these days

  • Phillip Bellows

The fact is that 911 was a military drill that went live and Boston bombing was also a drill that went live. I prefer that a drill for marshal law and dissident extraction not be performed. Fact the Councel on Foreign Affarirs told the Senate in 1951 and I paraphrase, we will have a one world government wetther you like it or not by choice or by force. Another fact is that every Presidential administration since since Nixon has push the New World Order aka One World Government.

Proud of Greg Abbott. Live near one of those Walmarts that were closed. Google operation Jade Helm. You might learn something. Sure won’t from obummer. Why did he make Texas a hostile state? If you don’t live here, you don’t get how we feel about our state.
