And the party of “we’re not racists” strikes again with another far-right leaning radical proudly displaying the true nature of many conservative voters. It’s like many liberals have said, “Not all conservatives are racists, but most racists are conservatives.”
Well, a Texas Republican candidate for United States Senate, Chris Mapp, seems determined to prove just how ignorant conservative ideology can be.
Mapp said that ranchers should be allowed to shoot “wetbacks” if they’re caught on their land. Then when he was confronted about the obvious racial overtones of that word, Mapp actually defended his usage of it by saying that using the term “wetback” to describe illegal immigrants is as “normal as breathing air in South Texas.”
And you know what, he’s right.
I’m from San Antonio. I spent a good amount of time down in South Texas. The term “wetback” is commonly used. Heck, I’ve seen people of Mexican heritage use it.
Now for him to say that using this slur is as “normal as breathing air” is complete nonsense. It’s a slur, like any other slur, that’s often said in small groups of people who have trust with one another.
But what he doesn’t realize is that, commonly used or not, it’s still an ignorant slur.
The infamous “N-word” was once (and still is) a commonly used derogatory slur for African-Americans. Just because certain groups of people commonly use a derogatory word, doesn’t make its usage justified. His defense of this word perfectly showcases just how ignorant Mr. Mapp really is.
Then there’s his belief that ranchers should be allowed to shoot “wetbacks” they see on their land.
Nothing quite like a Republican candidate for the United States Senate advocating murder.
How exactly would one identify a “wetback” anyway? Would he support the murder of all people who “looked” like one? Are ranchers supposed to identify the “wetback” as an illegal, then shoot them?
And let’s not forget that many of these people are coming here with their families – often including small children. Is he advocating for the murder of small children? Or is he just saying it’s okay to murder the children’s families in front of them, but the kids are off limits?
Honestly, it’s not even worth trying to rationalize – because the guy’s obviously a complete moron.
Then, just to solidify the fact that he’s a true Republican buffoon, he called President Obama a “socialist son of a bitch.” Proving that he clearly doesn’t know what a socialist is.
But that’s not really anything new. Republicans call Obama a socialist all the time, proving that they have absolutely no idea what socialism is.
Mapp’s comments highlight exactly the kind of mindset many conservatives that comprise the “base” of the Republican party have. I see it all the time. Sure, when comments like these are said publicly there’s a “shock” factor to them. But considering I hear stuff like this from conservative voters quite often, it doesn’t really shock me at all.
Because while I find his comments absolutely disgusting, they’re nothing that I haven’t already heard from conservative voters many times before.
