Donald Trump will go down in our history books as the most successful con man this nation has ever seen. This is someone who managed to become “President” of the United States by doing nothing more than selling lies, conspiracies, and pandering to people too ignorant to realize that nearly everything he was telling them was bullshit.
The thing is, Trump’s not even a good con artist.
Sure, he can run people in circles, read a crowd of gullible rubes so he knows how to pander to what they want to hear, and he definitely understands “show business” to a certain extent — but he’s not really good at any of it.
If I were going to create a caricature of a con artist, Trump’s pretty much the type of person I’d base my character on.
There’s nothing fancy, elaborate, or even clever about Trump’s scam — it’s always the same thing.
When something negative comes out against him, no matter what it’s been, he attacks the source reporting it, tries to slander anyone speaking out against him, accuses everyone of lying, denies the accusations, then claims it’s all part of a “rigged system out to get him.”
Whether it’s The Apprentice not winning an Emmy; the possibility he might lose an election (whether it be the GOP primary or presidential); the fact he lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton; pictures showing his inauguration crowd was much smaller than Barack Obama’s; the FBI’s investigation into his campaign, at least 16 women accusing him of sexual misconduct, or any negative story the media reports about him — it’s always the same con.
I’ve joked that Trump’s going to go down in history as the only billionaire white male who was born into a wealthy family who spent most of his life playing himself up as some sort of victim against a “rigged system always out to get him.”
According to Trump, he never does anything wrong. He’s never guilty of anything. He never loses something. He never lies about his conduct.
It’s always some sort of conspiracy working against him — always.
Everything he does is the best that it’s ever been done, while anything reporting otherwise is “totally false, unfair, and fake news!”
Then on the flip side of this coin is Trump’s attitude toward people who bow down to him, kiss his ass, and do what he wants. If you do all of that, then, of course, you’re a “wonderful, honest person who can do no wrong.”
This is why I don’t have sympathy for Trump supporters. It’s not as if he’s some gifted actor who strategically manipulated his way to the top with scams and cons that most people couldn’t recognize, even his critics.
He’s nothing more than one of the most successful two-bit hustlers in all of human history. He’s a weak, insecure fraud who’s reduced himself to a broken record repeating the same lies, conspiracies, and bullshit day after day.
Unfortunately, he has proven that there are millions of people in this country ignorant enough to buy into all of it.
