The Main Reason the U.S. Will Lose a Trade War with China: Trump’s an Idiot and They Know It

Despite what his supporters want to think of him, the reality is that Donald Trump is an incompetent fool who has absolutely no idea what he’s doing. Simply because his supporters refuse to acknowledge that fact doesn’t make it any less true.

Donald Trump’s an idiot — and the rest of the world knows it.

That’s why the on-going threat of an all-out trade war between the U.S. and China isn’t going to go well for this country.

There are plenty of reasons why a trade war would go badly for the United States — a main issue being that China can simply buy products from other places whereas many goods Americans buy are only made there — but the biggest, and most obvious, is the fact that the Chinese government is well aware that Trump doesn’t know what he’s doing. He’s nothing more than an unhinged blowhard who basically just spouts off about things like a drunken fool sitting at home commenting on your typical right-wing blog.

Right now we’re watching a tit-for-tat where Trump announces higher tariffs, China then announces their own, Trump responds with a larger number, China responds to that and so on and so forth.

It’s idiotic.

My theory is that China is effectively trolling Trump, calling his bluff, knowing full well that a massive trade war would be a disaster for our economy and, in turn, his party’s chances this November and his re-election hopes in 2020. No matter how many times Trump threatens tariffs, or how high he goes, China is just going to “one-up” him because they really don’t believe he’s going to follow through on his threats.

And even if he does, they’re pretty certain he would be forced to “cave” before they would.

At some point something is going to have to happen. Either Trump’s going to have to back down, embarrassing this country more than he already has, making us look incredibly weak, or he’s going to have to follow through on raising tariffs — torpedoing our economy in the process.

Trump’s idea of “negotiating” is asinine. His entire “strategy” is based upon trying to use whatever power he has to bully people into doing what he wants. Though as we’ve seen repeatedly with his attacks on the media, when he can’t force people to do what he wants, he takes to Twitter to whine and cry about it.

He really does seem to think threatening to raise tariffs is somehow going to scare China into giving him what he wants.

It’s not.

All he’s really done is backed himself into a corner to the point where he’s likely going to have to lie his way out of the dilemma. Either he’ll claim some sort of “victory” by making up a “deal” he’ll claim he’s working out with China, or he’ll pivot some way on his rhetoric, effectively ignoring a lot of what he’s been saying over the last few weeks. He’ll get away with this since, as we’ve seen many times already, his supporters never hold him accountable for anything he says or does.

At the end of the day, Trump’s going to accomplish one of two things. He’s:

  • Going to back down and try to lie his way out of the mess he’s created, making himself look even more incompetent, weak, and pathetic than he already does. — or —
  • Going to start an all-out trade war we can’t win, while wrecking our economy.

No matter which he chooses, at the end of the day, the United States comes out the loser because we have an idiot running the country.
