The War on Christmas: Brought to you by Fox News and Paranoid Republicans Everywhere

Sad_SantaEvery year around the start of December, Fox News ramps up their “War on Christmas” coverage.  It’s when they completely make up this notion that there’s some evil entity out there that’s slowly working its way through out society to kill Christmas.

It’s completely absurd.

For the last damn time, there is no war on Christmas.

Are there people who make a big deal out of people saying, “Merry Christmas!” during the holidays?  Yes, and those people suck.  But that doesn’t mean there’s a war on Christmas.  There’s always going to be groups of people who are “offended” by something and they’re often the ones who make the headlines.

But that doesn’t mean they represent the majority — not even close.

Preserving a separation of church and state during the holidays does not equate to an attack on Christmas.

I’m a Christian, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I absolutely love this time of year.  The colder weather, people are generally in better moods, the movies, the music, the atmosphere — I actually really enjoy all of it.

Now, if someone says, “Happy holidays” to me, I don’t get offended — I just say it back.  Generally if someone initiates a greeting, I just repeat whatever they say.  I don’t reply with some sarcastic, “Merry Christmas!” when someone says something other than that to me.

If someone says, “Happy Hanukkah,” I say that back as well.  You know why?  Because I’m not an immature prick.

Honestly, if you want to talk about a “war on Christmas,” look no further than conservatives.  It’s their warped view of Christianity, their insistence on shoving their religious views down everyone’s throats and their overall ignorance that’s driven so many people away from celebrating anything Christ-like with Christmas.

This yearly event by Fox News is nothing more than a ratings ploy because it sells great to those who are too ignorant to think for themselves.  They find a few obscure stories about someone who’s anti-Christmas making a big deal about something Christmas related, blast them on their airwaves relentlessly, then try to make it appear as if Christmas is being attacked everywhere.

Here’s an idea: If Republicans would stop acting like such pricks in the “name of Christianity,” maybe so many people wouldn’t oppose anything that might be Christian related?  Hmm, just a thought.

But this fake “war” has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with money.  Like I said, it’s just a tool used by Fox News to get people hostile and angry because that’s what sells.

The truth is, there is no “war on Christmas.”  There never was.

So from me and everyone here at Forward Progressives and at Right Off A Cliff, to everyone out there — Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa and everything in between.

I am always fascinating by folks who believe in their heart that Fox News is number one because most people are less intelligent than they are. And I always wonder about the process that leads someone to become so full of themselves. I’ve always been insecure and concerned that there a lot of things I don’t know that it would behoove me to know and that I need to spend way more time listening than talking.

agreed– FOX “news” is THE BEST when they do NEWS————— when they interject ( which is overt and covert) the anti liberal/ anti Obama/ anti Hillary stuff they are worthy of a beating. Im willing to ransom my pet TEGU that 75% –or MORE– of FOX “news” watcher do NOT watch msnbc and /or cnn.

I had the misfortune of watching a half hour of the Today Show a week or so ago. I was treated to a lengthy of discussion regarding what kind of cereal each co-host eats for breakfast and the merits of each. When it was over, I was not intellectually stimulated. I was, however, hungry.

I agree fully with Clifton that Fox continues to make this non-issue or minor issue into a seemingly big thing precisely in order to rile up people of a conservative mindset… to rile up those people so that they keep viewing their wretched ‘news’ and get more and more riled up about this and every other conservative ‘catastrophe du jour’…

But, that said, I think there was for quite some time, in the 90s and beyond, a movement to get ‘Merry Christmas’ as a seasonal greeting taken out of the public sphere… as well as to remove specifically Christmas-themed displays out of public institutions… then came a wave of making such displays ‘okay’ so long as they were accompanied by displays celebrating other traditions (Jewish, Muslim, erc.). Anyway, it seems to me some balance has been struck now and it’s ‘okay’ again for people to say ‘Merry Christmas’ and for towns to erect holiday displays, some of which have religious content (manger scenes, for example, and not just seasonal, commercialist reindeer-crap)…

There is a bit of tension that will always be around in our society between the need to tolerate religious expression but not allow the majority’s religious expression to become state-sanctioned… While Fox raves on trying to revive a fight from 10 or 15 years back, I think most people in the country have gotten pretty sane about this issue and most municipalities have figured out ways to acknowledge and even celebrate Christmas without making it seem like it’s part of an official state religion.

I’m an atheist. I don’t care if someone says Merry Christmas or Happy hanukkah. I’ll just say it back. After all, this is America where everyone is free to practice their own religion. We should all just be humans and not be defined by our religion. Just be kind to each other.

    • moe/larry & curly keys

Im agnostic————– the only REAL holidays we as americans should celebrate are veterens day and independence day ( and MY birthday)

    • Andy

Yes. I do the same thing, no matter whether I celebrate the holiday they named as well. As far as I’m concerned, they’re all variations of warm wishes and it’s easier to just say one of them than to have to say this: “Hm, what holiday(s) do you celebrate?” … “Oh, in that case, happy Festivus.”

See, the majority of us are kind people! I don’t know why so many are tryi
ng to fight over trivial things. We are all in the same boat with the same final destination. I identify as a Christian but, who’s to say I’m right? There might be something after the grave and there might not.

I told the cashier at Wal-Mart “Merry Christmas”….all of a sudden, a trap door opened up. I landed in a pit full of Gay Mexican Zombies & was repeatedly tasered until I was glowing like a light bulb. Can I get on Fox News to tell my story ?

    • FoxAreLiars

They would of course air it… without checking it’s authenticity.

  • Var Enyo

The only people I know who really hate Christmas are some small sects of Christians. They know it was taken over from pagan celebrations by the Catholic Church and by gosh they think it’s evil. (I have inlaws….)

When was the last time a Fox Employee said “merry Christmas” to a homeless person , and then did the right Christian thing and helped them out with a meal?

Assuming a person is Christian and wishing them a merry Christmas is along the same lines of assuming a woman with a belly is pregnant and asking her when she’s due. Happy holidays is a much safer option.

There’s no “War on Women” by Republicans but that doesn’t stop the fearmongering by the left now does it.

    • Foozie Grooler

      ..actually, that one is true.
Republicans only care about rich white men.
      They absolutely hate women.
Congressional Republicans have proposed no less than 624 bills to regulate women’s bodies, in 2013 alone.
In that same span, they’ve introduced 0 jobs bills.

      • Mark W. Mumma

How, exactly, do you justify the erroneous comment that “Republicans hate women”… because they don’t want to pay for all women’s birth control?

What about Republican women? Do they hate women?

And by “Regulate women’s bodies” are we talking about NOT killing innocent unborn babies? It seems to me that the party that wants to KILL babies in the womb are the real warriors against women. In war people die. The only death that is occurring is the cruel dismemberment going on in the wombs of liberal women.

You are aware, aren’t you, that we’re all endowed with certain inalienable rights. The first one on the list is LIFE. That seems to me to be the real ‘hatred of women’. If a female baby is ‘inconvenient’, then hey! Let’s just kill it!

Yeah, Republicans hate women so much they want the killing of babies STOPPED while the party who LOVES women so much encourages them to kill their babies.

Wow, that Fuzzie Drooler makes so much sense!! ~ said no one ever.

I am a Democrat and I do believe in a woman’s right to choose. This does not mean I believe in abortion. I want every child to be wanted and loved. I want every child to see food on the table, a roof over their heads, no deaths due to gun violence, and equal opportunities to succeed. You argue the rights of the fetus, but forget the child born in poverty. Let a Democrat speak in favor of welfare, then what side would you take? You want so badly to defend the fetus, but show no love toward the needs of the child. So until you are willing to give to the child then shut your damn mouth about abortion–you have no right to preach to a pregnant woman facing the prospect of hunger, homelessness, no health care, and violence, about her decisions. When you solve the problems of Republican lack of compassion–then, again, shut your damn mouth. You ARE waging a war on women and their children.

      • Mark W. Mumma

First of all, you didn’t need to specify that you were a Democrat. I would have guessed correctly all on my own the first time you said “Shut your damn mouth”. (Typical response from the tolerant, inclusive and ‘open minded’ crowd. You’re only open minded when someone is agreeing with you.)

*I* show no love towards the needs of a child???? And you “know this” how, exactly. Are you some kind of psychic? Do you have a crystal ball?

I support Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital and have taken a single mom under my wing since before he child was even born. Placing a child for adoption is better than just killing it.

There are plenty of couples that can’t have a child that would absolutely LOVE the chance at adopting an unwanted baby.

The argument to KILL a baby instead of let it be “born into poverty” is OBSCENE. Have you ever noticed that everyone who is ‘pro-choice’ has already been born.

Women. ALL WOMEN already have the right to choose not to get pregnant in the first place. Yes?

You seem to think you know a lot about me.

        You don’t.

Your twisted logic is just that…. TWISTED. In your world, mothers that abort their babies have every right to and those sticking up for the RIGHT TO LIFE are waging a ‘war on women and their children’. You need professional help lady. GET SOME.

      • moe/larry & curly keys

hey— let me ask U this: assuming U have one — if your 13 yr old beautiful daughter was raped by a low IQ freshly broken out-of-prison BLACK man named tyrone Leroy would U keep that baby??????????? ( “OR”,,,,,,,,,,, would THAT be an OK abortion?????)

      • moe/larry & curly keys

Oh, you get that response a lot do you? Ever consider that the problem might — in fact — be YOU? I would take the time to tell you why you’re wrong and why you are what Lenin (or was it Stalin) referred to as a “useful idiot” but there is a Duck Dynasty marathon on A&E that I am missing right now. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

      • moe/larry & curly keys

of course the problem is me!!!! I cannot/willnot deny that !!! what really is MY ostensible problem is quoting corroborated FACTS from such left wing shills as the CBO and the US Treasury!! Those commie bastards!! Duck dynasty? well; Im happy U have the wherewithal to watch such elucidating programming! ME? im a bugs bunny man myself! Gotta be all that Von Suppe and Rossini ( my fave) and other High IQ music fueling Bugs’ antics!

        and ———–UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU lied to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

( U promised to filter my oligophrenial verbosity!!)

    • Haikukitty

Uh… yeah there is. When some man tries to tell me what I can or cannot do with my own body, what birth control I can take or if I can take any – then there most certainly is a war on women. Or voting against equal pay for equal work. But of course, as a man, I’m sure you know better than me, right?

      • Nobody cares what you do with your body. If you want to sever YOUR spinal cord, I say more power to you. The problem arises when you want to sever the spinal cord of someone ELSE’S body. Do you not understand the difference?

In war limbs are torn off, spinal cords are severed and heartbeats are stilled.

Someone trying to do these things to you? Or is it YOU that desires the right to do these things to SOMEONE ELSE?

Surely you are not so dense as to now know the difference between YOUR body and someone ELSE’s body. Are you?

As a MAN, I believe we are all created equal. If you put forth effort equal to someone else (man or woman) you should be compensated equally.

Just like we should all be able to enjoy equal rights. The right to LIFE is the first one on the list.

There is no war on women, but there is a war on babies.

In my opinion Happy Holidays is accurate due to the number of holidays in a short period of time including New Years, observed by a number of different cultures and by saying happy holidays shows respect to all those cultures, collectively, in a very simple sentimental statement. The Christian right has proven that they are intolerant of anyone else’s culture other then their own. To find a sentimental statement like “Happy Holidays” offensive is boorish, intolerant, and very unchristian like.
A message to the fanatical christian right.
    1. Jesus Christ wan’t born on December 25, it was a date selected by the founders of organized Christianity to take away the winter solstice celebration by Pagans prior to the christian upraise. Christian founders found it was easier to appropriate the ancient religious celebrations then to try to eliminate them.
    2. Christmas as we know it is maybe about 100 years old. Before that the holiday was actually banned for a period of time in America because it was a foul holiday where people went door to door banging on the door demanding booze or they would throw rocks through their window. So, in other words much like Halloween for adults with drunken debauchery on the agenda.
A friend of mine says Christmas is all about kids and could care less otherwise. The holiday means different things to different people and being tolerant of other peoples points of view would be the true christian thing to do. But then again where FOX news is concerned true Christian values are negotiable as long as you agree with them.
