In case you hadn’t heard, a man who police say was intoxicated drove a truck into a crowd at Mardi Gras on Saturday, injuring 32 people. There weren’t any fatalities, but clearly this could have been a far bigger tragedy. Especially considering what happened a few weeks ago in Berlin when 12 people were killed, and dozens injured, when an Islamic radical drove a truck into the crowded Berlin Christmas market.
Now, to be fair, one event was clearly a motivated act of terrorism where the other seems to be an extremely intoxicated fool who witnesses say didn’t seem to understand what he had just done. So the circumstances behind the two events are very different.
Yet, Donald Trump didn’t send out a single tweet about what happened in Louisiana. Not a “glad to hear no one was killed,” or even a comment on the dangers of drinking and driving — nothing.
Now, I know what some will say: This wasn’t a terrorist attack, nobody died, and the driver was drunk so why should he?
Well, considering he apparently likes to fabricate terrorist attacks, lie about the rate of violent crime in our inner cities, or push absurd conspiracies about the media not covering terrorism, one would think he’d at least have something to say about a fairly big story where we’re extremely lucky that we’re not talking about multiple deaths.
But, not a word.
See, this is how fear-mongering works. Ignore everything (usually the majority) that doesn’t support your propaganda, while over-selling anything that does. Then just repeat it over and over and over and over.
Fatalities or not, who here really thinks had a Muslim, or even an immigrant of any kind, been behind the wheel of that truck Saturday, Trump wouldn’t have tweeted about it almost as soon as the news broke? If a Muslim or an immigrant had driven into a crowd of people during a major U.S. festival, that’s all Trump would be talking about right now. He’d be spinning it to push his anti-Muslim/anti-immigrant fear-mongering propaganda, while bragging about how “right” he is about “extreme vetting” or being “tougher on immigration.”
A few weeks ago when two white nationalists, and apparent fans of Trump, killed six and wounded eight others during a terrorist attack at a Mosque in Quebec City, “The Donald” didn’t send out a single tweet or even publicly comment on the shooting.
Again, who really thinks had a Muslim killed six and wounded eight others in some act of terrorism, Trump would have completely ignored that?
Last Wednesday, a 51-year-old white male in Kansas allegedly shouting racial slurs, including “Get out of my country,” killed one man and injured two others in a crowded bar. One of the survivors said that, prior to the shooting, the man was asking them about their visas and if they were in the country illegally. You know, talking points taken directly from Trump’s anti-immigrant propaganda.
Yet, not a single tweet or comment about this hate crime from Trump.
Once again, who reading this thinks that if a Muslim or immigrant had shot two people in a Kansas bar, Trump wouldn’t have said a single word about it?
Oh, but Trump did find time to tweet about shootings in Chicago.
Notice a pattern?
White males carry out acts of murder or violence, Trump says nothing. However, if Muslims, immigrants, or minorities do, then he seems extremely eager to talk about those acts of violence.
This is how actual fake news gets spread. Agenda-driven propagandists like Trump often completely ignore anything that doesn’t support their narrative, while exploiting any tragedy that will. What then follows is a false narrative of “out-of-control violence/terrorism” that’s not remotely factual. But it appears that way because Trump’s not only ignoring acts of violence that don’t back up his talking points, but he’s exaggerating, if not outright fabricating, terrorist attacks to people who are gullible enough to believe anything he says.
And this is how his administration is going to go, because this is how propagandist dictators operate. Donald Trump’s going to mostly ignore anything he feels that he can, knowing that his supporters only trust “news” from sources that are friendly to him, while seeking out and exploiting any tragedy he can find (or even making some up) that helps him push fear-mongering against Muslims, immigrants, and minorities.
