It’s Time Sane Republicans Admit the Truth: They No Longer Have a Party

While I’m not a fan of Republicans like Mitch McConnell, Peter King, John Kasich or Lindsey Graham, I’ll at least give them credit for being sane. Sure, I disagree with them on practically every major political issue we face in this country, but at least when it’s all said and done, when I hear them speak, they usually seem mentally sound.

Sadly, in today’s GOP those gentlemen (and other sane individuals like them) are no longer seen as “true conservatives.” Even John Kasich, a man who was once considered one of the most conservative Republicans in the country, gained almost no support during his presidential campaign because he refused to pander to the same bigotry and racism which Donald Trump capitalized on.

What’s happened since the Republican party embraced the tea party is the crazies have now officially taken over. These are folks who quite literally buy into their own propaganda. They are the conspiracy theorists who don’t live in the same reality as most people. People who cheer a presidential candidate who literally admits he knows most of them are mindless sheep.

Over the past few years, these tea party conservatives have acted more like they’re trying to hold our government hostage rather than actually trying to govern.

Even in 2013, when polls overwhelming showed the majority of the American people opposed the shutdown and blamed the GOP for our government being closed, Republicans like Sen. Ted Cruz continued to fight against reopening the government. Again, this was despite the fact that there was literally no chance at all that closing the government was going to culminate in defunding the ACA.

That reality didn’t seem to matter. To this day, tea party conservatives will insist that the sane Republicans who eventually voted to reopen the government three years ago “sold out to the Obama agenda.” Remember, reality told us there was no way they were going to win, which meant that the shutdown was absolutely pointless – and the American people were blaming Republicans for it. Yet despite all of that, tea party conservatives still consider those who “gave in to Obama” sellouts.

Then look at just a few months ago when House Speaker John Boehner was basically pushed out by these right-wing lunatics who call themselves the “freedom caucus.” Following the news that he was going to be resigning, there was a mad dash within the party to find someone to replace him and it really came down to the fact that only Paul Ryan could be “that guy.”

Even the 2016 GOP primary was an absolute joke. The GOP has become so dysfunctional that, even though Donald Trump ran away with the nomination, the party still seems reluctant to get behind him — with some Republicans flat-out saying they’re not going to vote for him.

That’s how absurd things have gotten within the Republican party. They just had a candidate run away with their party’s nomination in record fashion, yet there are still many within the party trying to figure out a way to keep him from being the party’s nominee.

What all of this chaos signifies is that the GOP has officially been taken over by people like Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson, Mike Lee, Steve King, Louie Gohmert and other tea party fanatics. Conservatives who seem to believe you govern based on what you think should be real as opposed to what’s actually real.

The bottom line is, you can’t be sane or reasonable and call yourself a Republican anymore. You can’t support common sense approaches to immigration; believe that climate change is real; or even adhere to rulings issued by the Supreme Court via our Constitution without being considered a “RINO” by a majority of conservative voters.

That’s why I think it’s time sane Republicans realize that they no longer have a political party.

It’s not that Republicans such as John Kasich, Lindsey Graham or Mitch McConnell aren’t conservative enough to be Republicans, it’s that they’re too sane to be considered Republicans in today’s tea party-controlled GOP.
