Since Donald Trump has become a nearly 24/7 news story, there seems to have been a huge wave of people who are now desensitized to things that are still extremely offensive – they’re just not Trump-level offensive.
Even Newt Gingrich alluded to this a couple of weeks ago when he said in any other year, Ted Cruz would be shunned by the Republican party because he’s a radical and almost nobody likes him. But because Trump is that bad, Cruz has actually been treated as somewhat moderate for this entire election thus far.
But make no mistake about it, Ted Cruz damn sure isn’t a moderate.
Well, on Wednesday night, The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah mocked the media for basically gushing over Trump’s victory speech following his win in New York – because he wasn’t vile, offensive or insulting.
“What we got to see yesterday was a new Trump,” Noah said. “He was succinct. Disciplined. And respectful. Which, according to the media, made him presidential as balls.”
He then played several clips of various members of the media from the various cable news channels claiming Trump seemed very “presidential,” practically gushing over the fact that he managed to give a speech where he didn’t personally insult or demean anyone. Something that apparently made him “presidential.”
“And he wasn’t racist. And he didn’t call any female reporters a bimbo. This guy is ready for the White House, give him the codes!” Noah quipped.
“This is ridiculous,” Noah stated. “Trump has basically lowered the media’s expectation so much that not insulting someone seems presidential to them. That’s a tactic straight from The Art of The Deal. Wear people down so that they will accept the bare minimum.”
“Trump stabbed a stranger on Fifth Avenue!” Noah continued. “Yeah, but at least he didn’t shoot them. He’s so presidential!”
Trevor Noah is absolutely right. All Trump needed to do to seem “presidential” is not insult people in one speech, which is completely ridiculous.
But that really is how low the bar has been set when it comes to Trump. His campaign has been driven by such incredible hate, ignorance and outlandish comments that all he has to do is not be a vile prick once or twice and suddenly he’s “presidential.”
While the 2016 Republican presidential primary has been an absolute circus thus far – just wait. The closer this sideshow gets to the convention, the more outrageous it’s going to get.
