It’s not exactly a secret that Donald Trump spends most of his mornings watching cable news while tweeting about what’s said about him. These almost daily rants mostly consist of him launching a petty attack against someone who’s said something critical of him, bragging about himself, or whining about how any and all negative media coverage of him is “fake news.”
Practically every morning, like clockwork, Trump’s Twitter hissy fits begin.
Well, Monday was unique.
You see, this morning, for the first time since this controversy began, the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson did an interview with Good Morning America. Naturally the topic of the “president’s” phone call was brought up, and this is what she had to say:
I heard him stumbling on trying to remember my husband’s name, and that’s what hurt me the most because if my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risked his life for our country why can’t you remember his name.
That’s what made me upset and cry even more because my husband was an awesome soldier.
She also said that Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL) was “100 percent correct” when she said Trump told her that her husband “knew what he signed up for,” while also calling out Trump for accusing Rep. Wilson of fabricating the story.
“Why would we fabricate something like that?” Johnson asked.
Within minutes of this interview airing, Trump sent out the following tweet:
I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 23, 2017
In other words, that’s Donald Trump calling the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson a liar.
Let me put that another way.
On Monday October 23, 2017, the current “President” of the United States accused a Gold Star widow of lying about what he said to her during his phone call concerning the recent death of her husband who died in combat.
I can’t emphasize enough how big of an issue this is.
For a moment let’s focus on the fact that as soon as Rep. Wilson told the media what Trump had said to Johnson’s widow, he accused the congresswoman of “fabricating” the story, then said he had proof that he didn’t say what she claimed he did — except he didn’t have proof and he did, in fact, say to Johnson’s widow exactly what Rep. Wilson said he did.
So right off the bat Trump proved what most people reading this already knew. Whenever the truth about how awful he is gets exposed, his go-to move is to deny the accusations are true and attack the credibility of the source.
Aka, call it “fake news.”
Furthermore, for the past few days Trump’s repeatedly attacked and slandered Rep. Wilson, calling her “wacky” multiple times on Twitter, while continuing to insist that she’s lying about what he said.
For no other reason than the fact that she told the truth about something he said and it made him look incredibly bad.
Even after Sgt. La David Johnson’s mother confirmed Trump’s phone call was disrespectful to her son and the family, that didn’t have any impact on his insistence that nothing he said was wrong.
Yet Monday morning took things to an entirely different level.
On Monday morning this wasn’t Rep. Wilson’s account of what she heard, or Sgt. Johnson’s mother describing how they felt about Trump’s call. This was Myeshia Johnson, the pregnant widow of Sgt. Johnson, publicly stating that she felt disrespected by his call, that the “president” struggled to remember her husband’s name and that he did, in fact, say that “he knew what he signed up for” — then Trump called her a liar on Twitter just a few minutes later by stating he “spoke his name from the beginning, without hesitation!”
As I’ve said before, no president in United States history has shown more disrespect toward our military or our veterans than Donald Trump.
The man who said he didn’t feel Senator John McCain was a war hero because he likes people who weren’t captured, belittling all POWs with his insult, and attacked Gold Star parents of a soldier who died fighting in Iraq because they criticized him, has now effectively called a Gold Star widow a liar within minutes of her saying he disrespected her husband, couldn’t remember his name, and had spent the last week lying when he denied telling her “he knew what he signed up for.”
I honestly don’t know how any supporter of Donald Trump can look themselves in the mirror.
