Trump Supporters Have Proven Republicans Have No Respect for the Presidency & this Country

Being the President of the United States is about much more than simply being the person who won an election. To hold that office means you’re the “face” and representative for this country and every human being living within its borders. It also means you’re the leader of the most powerful nation that’s ever existed. Above all else, even if a president is incompetent when it comes to every policy they support, they need to at least represent that office with maturity, dignity, and class. Nearly everything they say or do will almost certainly make news in practically every country on Earth. Whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, Independent, or something else — we should all recognize and respect what the office of the President of the United States truly represents.

That’s why I’m disgusted at how little respect Donald Trump, Republicans, and his supporters show for that office or this country.

No matter what you might have thought about Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, or Barack Obama, at least each man treated that office with respect. Whether or not you agreed with their policies or politics, at the bare minimum, they conducted themselves as president in a manner that was befitting someone calling the White House home.

Donald Trump does not.

This is someone who’s so incompetent, even as the “leader of the free world,” he still feels as if he can get on Twitter and personally attack people, clearly impervious to the fact that, as President of the United States, his words matter. He’s someone who lashes out at our U.S. intelligence officials, pushes blatant conspiracies against his predecessor, and childishly goes after the “fake media” whenever they dare call out one of his many lies.

Many laughably believed Trump would show some more maturity once he was in office. Sadly, 71-year-old pathological liars who can’t control themselves on social media don’t typically have much room to mature.

The fact that Republicans backed this man shows how little respect they actually have for the office he currently holds. Trump is a thrice married adulterer who bragged about sexual assault, mocked a man with disabilities, and attacked Gold Star parents, yet he still has millions of people rallying around him. It’s a true testament to the lack of respect his supporters have for the Oval Office and this country.

Out of the litany of GOP candidates who ran for president, conservative voters overwhelmingly chose the most immature, ignorant, incompetent, and vile among them. A man with a history of fraud, corruption, unethical business practices, conspiracies, and deplorable comments was the choice for the so-called “Christian moral majority.”

No matter how often he’s caught lying, or times they defend him for something they’d certainly attack someone else for doing, Trump supporters almost never waver in their infatuation with him. They literally change the rules at a moments notice to protect him from controversies they’d use as weapons to attack someone they opposed.

Even when reports told us he hung up on the Australian prime minister, or actually used the word “hombres” while talking to the president of Mexico, nothing fazes those who proudly declare they’re going to “Make America great again!”

It doesn’t even matter that he’s already broken many of his campaign promises:

  • To “drain the swamp,” while hiring Wall Street executives, lobbyists, top donors, and billionaires to fill his cabinet positions.
  • “Make Mexico pay for the wall,” that even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said isn’t going to happen.
  • “Make health care coverage cheaper and cover more people,” despite the fact the plan he’s endorsed is, by all accounts, going to increase premiums and take health care away from millions.
  • “Be transparent,” as he bans members of the media from press briefings and still won’t release his tax returns.
  • “Be the law and order president,” as he defends an attorney general who committed perjury in front of Congress.
  • “Prosecute Hillary Clinton,” something he announced almost immediately he’s not going to do.

Even as he’s broken so many of his key promises, his supporters never question or criticize him.

It really shouldn’t surprise any of us. These are the people who spent eight years hurling horrific insults at President Obama, fueled by conspiracy theorists like Trump. People who view an American-hating murderer like Vladimir Putin more favorably than they do Obama or Clinton. Because to these folks, it’s “patriotic” to hate Americans with whom they simply disagree more than they do dictator-like tyrants who literally hate us.

Meanwhile, for the sake of party over country, the GOP has stood behind this national embarrassment — even though it’s clear, deep down, most of them know what a joke he is. For them, partisan politics means more than doing what’s best for this country. Their careers, and the risk of alienating Trump supporters by standing against him, are more important than the well-being of our nation. They’d much rather defend a man turning this country into a global laughing stock than dare risk offending the Trump snowflakes who never question the Orange Master.

If there’s one thing that’s been undoubtedly proven following the rise of Donald Trump, it’s that the GOP and his supporters have absolutely no respect for the office of the presidency or this country. For them, it’s about their own selfish wants, delusions, ambitions, and winning above all else — even if that means buying into ridiculous conspiracies that slander U.S. intelligence agencies for the defense of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and, of course, the most pro-Russia politician in American history, Donald J. Trump.
