Donald Trump saying something completely ridiculous isn’t exactly “breaking news.” Hardly a day goes by that this “president” doesn’t say something absurd that often defies the laws of reality. Trump honestly seems to live under the belief that “reality” is whatever he wants it to be rather than what it actually is, which is rather easy to do when you’re supported by tens of millions of people who never hold you accountable for anything you say or do.
A perfect example of how delusional and dishonest Trump is came Tuesday when he actually tweeted out that he’s been tougher on Russia than Barack Obama was:
I have been much tougher on Russia than Obama, just look at the facts. Total Fake News!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 20, 2018
Without a doubt, that’s one of the most preposterous things he’s ever said.
What facts are we supposed to look at?
That question is rhetorical since it’s highly unlikely that he’ll ever go into detail. Again, as always, Trump just says stuff as “fact” without actually providing any real facts to back it up.
In no way possible can any sane, rational, or factually-based person claim that Trump’s been “tough” on Russia — let alone tougher than Obama was.
Not only has Trump continually praised Russia throughout his campaign and his “presidency,” to this day I can’t recall a single instance where he took anything resembling a strong stance against Russia or Vladimir Putin for attacking this country during the 2016 election.
In fact, he’s seemingly gone out of his way to give them special treatment. Like last year when he revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador which we hadn’t even shared with our allies, in a closed-door meeting during which Russian state media was welcomed but American press was locked out.
Furthermore, just days after CIA director Mike Pompeo met with Russian intelligence officials in Washington a few weeks back, this administration announced that it was not going to enforce the sanctions Congress overwhelmingly passed (517-5) against Russia for launching a cyber attack against this country trying to undermine the integrity of our democracy.
Following the news that Robert Mueller had indicted 13 Russians and 3 Russia-backed groups for their role in that cyber attack, Trump spent the weekend attacking everyone from Obama, to Democrats, the FBI, his own national security advisor, and even Oprah Winfrey — but not Russia.
Not. One. Single. Time.
On the other hand, not only did Obama, in fact, call Russia out before the 2016 election for trying to interfere in our democracy (though I’ll be the first to admit that he didn’t talk about this enough until it was too late), he imposed harsh sanctions on the Russian government soon after the 2016 election for their attack on this country.
So what, exactly, has Trump done to be “tougher on Russia” than Obama?
I challenge any of his supporters reading this to enlighten me as to not only how Trump’s been “tougher,” but what, specifically, he’s done to be tougher on Russia than Obama.
And, no, simply saying “he’s putting America first” or some other vague, stupid cliché Trump talking point lacking any actual substance doesn’t constitute a valid answer.
I’ll say this much, in a lot of ways, it must be fairly easy to be Donald Trump. Life as a politician is simple when you can say pretty much anything — no matter how ridiculous — because you know your supporters are gullible enough to believe anything you say.
