Remember “back in the day” (and by that I mean prior to January 20, 2017) when Republicans blasted presidents for sitting back, signing executive orders and completely bypassing Congress? I remember when Republicans talked about impeaching Obama over his immigration executive order protecting DREAMers from being deported. The “Obama is ruling like a dictator/king” nonsense got so ridiculous I felt compelled to write an article pointing out that he was on pace to issue far fewer executive orders than Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush.
Sadly, as many of us know, most Republicans couldn’t care less about facts, reality, or even basic common sense.
That’s why it shouldn’t surprise anyone that we’re now witnessing Donald Trump acting like the unconstitutional dictator Republicans always accused President Obama of being.
Since he was officially sworn in, pretty much all he’s done is sit behind his desk, signing one executive order after another. Donald Trump and the Republican Party haven’t even tried to put together any sort of meaningful legislation.
From building his stupid wall, to his ban on Muslims, he’s authorized billions of taxpayer dollars to be spent, while ordering the detention of people at our airports, all via executive orders.
Meanwhile, congressional Republicans have done almost nothing. In fact, most have either supported these moves, or stayed silent — like cowards.
Again, the party that talked about impeaching Obama over an executive order pertaining to protecting DREAMers hasn’t even uttered that word as this nation deals with someone who’s authorizing billions of taxpayer funds to be spent, and having people detained at airports, without Congress having a thing to do with any of it.
Let’s also not forget that Trump’s made a hero to the alt-right/white nationalists, and former head of an extreme right-wing website, one of his top advisors and a key figure on the National Security Council.
Oh, by the way, Bannon also once told someone that he’s a “Leninist” who “wanted to destroy the state.”
Just imagine if Obama had someone like that on his staff. A person who who many feel is actually the real “president,” pulling Trump’s strings like a puppet.
It’s clear that Trump’s surrounding himself with “yes men,” seeking out information from others on how he can “legally” sign executive orders to abuse his power. He doesn’t seem to have any desire to actually go to Congress for anything he feels he can get away with on his own, because he hasn’t even remotely tried to do so up until this point. Hell, Sen. Marco Rubio said his staff was told by the State Department that they had been ordered not to answer questions from Congress.
If President Obama had instructed the Department of Justice to not answer requests from Congress following an executive order that ignited protests all over the country, Republicans would have lost their minds. Yet, thus far, we’ve seen a collective “meh” from the vast majority of the party.
Then again, had Republicans held Donald Trump to the same standards to which they held Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, then there’s no way any of these hypocrites would have voted for him in the first place.
When you get right down to it, Donald Trump is the unconstitutional dictator Republicans spent eight years falsely accusing Barack Obama of being.
