When Trump Stops Treating His Supporters Like Idiots, I’ll Stop Calling Them Stupid

Every time I refer to Trump supporters as “stupid,” inevitably I get people criticizing me for doing so. Their argument is that we’ll never be able to “convince them of how terrible he is” by calling them insulting names like “stupid,” “morons,” “ignorant,” or “idiots.”

To be honest, I agree.

Calling Trump supporters “stupid” isn’t a great tactic for anyone whose goal is to convince them that he’s an incompetent, unethical con artist who has no business being “president.”

That said, I gave up on trying to reason with Trump supporters a very long time ago. When indisputable facts started being dismissed as “fake news,” while direct contradicting quotes from Trump himself weren’t enough evidence to prove that he’s a liar, that’s when I realized it was completely pointless to try to reason with the overwhelming majority of Trump supporters.

I’m not saying I don’t still have debates with them now and again; I do, but I use those tests of my sanity more as my way to entertain myself by watching them perform mental gymnastics trying to defend the indefensible.

The truth is, while I might still call them “stupid,” Trump treats them like they are nearly every single day.

A person in Trump’s position can’t say or do the things that he does if he actually respects the people who support him. You can’t lie as blatantly (and as often) as he does if you believe that the people backing you are intelligent enough to realize you’re completely full of crap.

For me, one of the main things I always go back to was Trump calling the monthly jobs report and economic numbers “fake” and “phony” throughout his campaign — until he was sworn into office. Now he brags about the very same numbers he once claimed weren’t real.

All the while it never dawns on his supporters that, when he was calling those reports “fake” and “phony,” he was flat-out lying to them.

Then there’s his idiotic wall.

After basing a huge part of his campaign on Mexico paying for the useless wall he wants to build, now he’s seeking billions of taxpayer dollars, promising that eventually Mexico will pay for it.

Honestly, how stupid does someone have to be to actually believe that?

Yet that’s the propaganda Trump’s legitimately telling his supporters to believe — and most of them do.

Then there’s health care.

He promised that his health care plan was going to make insurance better, cheaper, and cover more people. Yet after months of failing to repeal and replace Obamacare, every single plan he backed didn’t do any of that. Not only that, but it’s obvious he never actually had any plan for health care to begin with. His campaign promise to make health care better was just Trump saying exactly what he knew his supporters wanted to hear, because he knows they’re stupid enough to never hold him accountable for any lie he tells them.

At least 16 women have accused him of sexual abuse. According to Trump, they’re all liars.

Any news report about him that’s negative is fake news. Even though many of the stories he’s called “fake” have been proven to be factual.

The only truthful cable news network is Fox News. Even though they’ve reported many of the same stories he’s called other news outlets “fake” for reporting.

He doesn’t watch much television. Even though nearly every morning, between the hours of 5-9 a.m., Trump’s often rage-tweeting about things said on cable news.

If elected, he’ll work so hard he won’t have time to play golf. Said by the man currently on pace to play much more golf than Barack Obama — the president Trump spent years bashing for — wait for it — playing golf.

He never paid off an adult film star to be quiet about an affair he had with her on his current wife just after the birth of his youngest son. I guess we should just ignore the $130k payout setup by his lawyer just before the election.

He’s not a racist! I guess that’s true if you ignore the fact that his company settled a lawsuit concerning racial discrimination; the fact he’s tweeted out anti-African American and anti-Muslim propaganda created by hate groups; he defended neo-Nazis and other white supremacists as “fine people”; he was found guilty of using bigotry against Native Americans hoping to block a competing casino from being built; he called Haiti and African nations “sh*tholes”; and he built most of his campaign vilifying people of color.

No one respects the military more than he does. Except when he’s belittling POWs, attacking Gold Star parents, lying about how much money he raised for veterans, lying about calling all the families of soldiers who’ve died since he was sworn into office, and calling a Gold Star widow a liar after she publicly confirmed that Trump said her husband “knew what he signed up for.”

Every day I sit here and think about the things Trump says and does that his supporters would never let Obama, or any Democrat for that matter, get away with. Yet they’ll say or do anything to make excuses for the vile, disgusting fraud currently occupying the White House.

Though I think what continues to baffle my mind the most is how blatantly stupid Trump treats his supporters, yet no matter how absurd his lies become, nothing shakes their faith in him.

When Trump called his supporters mindless sheep who would support him no matter what, he was absolutely right.

So, to Trump supporters, or anyone else who has a problem with me calling his devoted followers “stupid,” I’ll make a deal with all of you. I’ll stop calling them stupid just as soon as he stops blatantly treating them like they are.
