While I applaud conservatives like Ana Navarro, Charlie Sykes, Nicolle Wallace, Rick Wilson, and several others for refusing to bow down and kiss Donald Trump’s backside when they know that he’s a pathological-lying corrupt fraud who has no business being “president” simply because there’s an “R” next to his name, I still can’t help but feel as if these folks, and others like them, have been in denial about the Republican Party for a very long time.
For progressives like myself, someone like Trump becoming a superstar among the right isn’t surprising. In fact, early on into his campaign I called him the “perfect Republican candidate.” He’s an arrogant, racist, bigoted hypocrite and con artist not bound by reality who seems to believe “facts” are whatever he wants them to be.
In other words, Trump’s a perfect representation of what the Republican Party has been for a very long time. The only difference now is that he’s put on full display what many Republicans have flatly denied was true about their party all this time.
When progressives accused the GOP of being driven by bigotry and racism, many conservatives claimed that was unfair, dismissing any examples we’d use to prove our point as “outliers who didn’t represent our values.”
Then they rushed to embrace a man who launched his campaign calling most Mexican immigrants “rapists and criminals,” whose company once settled a lawsuit with the DOJ for racial discrimination, and was enthusiastically supported by the KKK, neo-Nazis, and white nationalists such as David Duke who has frequently stated that Trump represents the values of people like him.
We’ve also seen a massive uptick in unapologetic racists running for public office — as Republicans.
When progressives called Republicans fake Christians who didn’t give a damn about the values represented by Jesus Christ, they grabbed their Bibles and declared themselves the “party for morality and family values.”
Then conservatives nominated for their party’s presidential candidate — then elected as “president” — a vile, vulgar adulterer who was caught on video bragging about sexually assaulting women, is on his third marriage, has five children with three different women, and has tried to slander the 16 women who’ve accused him of sexual abuse.
Even as new reports surfaced concerning affairs he had on his current wife, First Lady Melania Trump, with two women he paid to keep quiet, these “Christians” continue to support and defend him.
When progressives claimed that Republicans aren’t patriotic and only use our military and veterans to score cheap political points, conservatives waved their flags and chanted “USA!”
Then they voted into office a multiple draft-dodger who mocked an American war hero; belittled POWs in general; attacked Gold Star parents; told a Gold Star widow that her husband “knew what he signed up for” — then called her a liar for publicly confirming he said that; lied about how much money he raised for veterans groups; told a Gold Star father that he would send him a $25,000 check, then didn’t send it until the father publicly called him out for not doing so; lied about calling every family of soldiers who’ve been killed since he’s been in office; didn’t make a single comment about a deadly terrorist attack in Niger that killed four American troops until nearly 2 weeks later when the media called him out on it; and compared not getting an STD to fighting in the Vietnam War.
When progressives called b.s. on Republicans claiming to be the party of “fiscal responsibility,” pointing out that they only seem to care about spending and deficits when a Democrat is in the White House, conservatives claimed that spending was out of control during the Obama administration and Democrats were giving away the future of our grandchildren.
Then the moment they get power they pass legislation — most notably their massive tax scam — that’s projected to add over $1.5 trillion to our deficits after Obama actually reduced them by nearly $1 trillion during his time in office.
When progressives called out Republicans for accusing Democrats of being “anti-American” and “weak” in responding to our enemies, conservatives insisted that they were proud patriots who put “America first” and liberals “hated this country.”
Then they elected, and continue to defend, a man who’s praised Russia; frequently tries to slander and undermine U.S. intelligence agencies; refuses to respond in any way to the fact that the Russian government attacked us during the 2016 election; declined to enforce sanctions on Russia that were overwhelmingly passed by Congress in a 517-5 vote; would rather talk poorly about past U.S. presidents than Vladimir Putin; and won’t give the authorization for anyone in our government to protect this country from Russian cyber attacks intelligence experts say are ongoing.
When progressives called out Republicans for being hypocrites about caring about our Constitution, conservatives harped on endlessly about being “defenders of Constitutional values” while accusing anyone who opposed them of “hating the Constitution.”
Then they elected a man who’s frequently attacked our judicial system when rulings don’t go his way; seems to believe that “freedom of the press” means that the media should only report what he wants them to; believes that Congress works for him instead of the American people; has spoken in favor of torture; has a history of accusing people of being guilty of crimes without any actual evidence — just his opinion of the person; fired an FBI director for not giving into his pressure to end an investigation into someone who later went on to plead guilty; pardoned a racist former sheriff after he was found guilty of ignoring a court’s legal and Constitutional order; frequently launches public attacks against his own Department of Justice trying to bully them into doing what he wants rather than what the law says they should do; and clearly behaves as if he feels that, as “president,” he should be above the law.
The GOP is also the same party that backs and tries to pass laws that make discrimination “legal,” while violating a woman’s right to have control over her own body.
So, what’s my point and what’s any of this have to do with fascism?
Well, because if you accuse Republicans now of being the party of fascism, they’ll deny it. Just like they did all the other accusations progressives have made against them for years — until Trump proved progressives have been right all along.
Yet here we are, being led by the most dictator-like “president” in U.S. history — a man literally supported by fascist Nazis and white supremacists who has a history of praising authoritarian tyrants — yet many Republicans still deny that the GOP is the party of fascism.
Progressives have been right when we’ve called out conservatives and the Republican Party on all these other issues, and we’re right about this.
Whether or not Republicans want to admit the truth is irrelevant, the fact remains that the modern day GOP is the party of fascism and their embrace and continued support of Donald Trump proves it.
